The Assistant Principal serves as a school leader and is responsible for assisting the building principal with the daily supervision of school operational and instructional issues, supporting the Grand Rapids Public Schools' goal of increased scholar achievement and rigorous, relevant instruction. The incumbent implements the school philosophy, supports teachers and scholars, and fosters positive relationships among teachers, scholars, and parents. The position reports to the principal.
QualificationsRequired
Education and Experience:
- A minimum of three years of successful teaching (Pre‑K–12, college, or university level) or
- A minimum of three years of recent successful experience as an Instructional Lead Teacher (ILT) member.
- A valid Michigan school administrator’s certificate, or enrollment in a certification program within six months of employment, completing the program within three years.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in secondary administration, supervision, curriculum, or education.
- A minimum of three years of successful teaching in secondary.
- Knowledge of mastery or standard‑focused grading processes and project/place‑based education pedagogies.
- Leadership and problem‑solving skills, human relations, interpersonal communication, and ability to maintain a safe, orderly learning environment.
- Proficiency in technology use (email, internet, Microsoft Office) and ability to learn district standard software.
- Advocacy for scholars and staff.
- Commitment to diversity and creating an inclusive environment for all members of the school community.
- Change management skills, flexibility, and adaptability.
- Demonstrated leadership and positive relationships with staff, scholars, and parents.
- Coordinate and implement the district’s instructional program, ensuring scholar achievement.
- Provide leadership and support for teaching and learning, including observing and conferring with teachers, conducting learning walks, leading professional learning communities, credit/unit recovery, data reviews, and governance board processes.
- Assist with character education programs and restorative justice processes.
- Ensure compliance with district policies: uniform discipline code, uniform and dress code, attendance, and discipline procedures.
- Support school safety and an orderly environment, including discipline and attendance record preparation.
- Plan and coordinate extracurricular activities and supervise scholars during non‑instructional hours.
- Maintain inventory of equipment, books, and supplies.
- Collect and analyze data on failure rates, absenteeism, and suspension rates to inform interventions.
- Perform other reasonable duties as assigned, maintaining dependable attendance and punctuality.
- Implement school district procedures and policies.
- Prepare discipline and attendance records.
- Assist principal with inter‑agency collaboration for scholar needs, extracurricular planning, parental reporting, supervision during non‑instructional hours, and inventory management.
Physical demands include occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds, frequent up to 30 pounds, and constant up to 10 pounds. Work may involve standing, walking, sitting, using hands, climbing, kneeling, and carrying. Mental functions include comparing, analyzing, communicating orally and in writing, coordinating, instructing, computing, synthesizing, evaluating, negotiating, and using interpersonal skills.

Salary: $87,691.60 to $114,418 per year
