The Bishop of Grand Rapids is the visible head and source of unity in the particular Church entrusted to his pastoral care (CCC 1594). In a unique and visible way, he makes Christ’s mission present and enduring while functioning in his role as shepherd of the Christian community. To fulfil his mission, the Bishop trusts chosen collaborators—clerics, religious, and lay people—to share the apostolic mission and to entrust various responsibilities to them.
Each employee helps extend the ministry of the local pastor in particular ways as outlined in this position description.
An ideal candidate is an experienced elementary teacher, a faithful practicing Catholic who possesses knowledge of the Catholic intellectual tradition and is well‑prepared to manage a classroom. The fourth‑grade teacher is responsible for all aspects of the fourth‑grade classroom at Sacred Heart Academy, teaching reading/literature, grammar, math, history, science, and religion to a single section of students.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Know, observe, and execute the Roles, Relationships, Responsibilities described on page 3, consistent with the described Rights, Resources, and Qualifications.
- Effectively manage the classroom and successfully execute all teaching assignments.
- Prepare lessons, correct assignments in a timely and efficient manner, and maintain excellent communication with parents regarding student personal and academic progress.
- Maintain classroom facilities, manage curriculum, and keep academic and attendance records as required.
- Integrate Jesus Christ, the life of the Church, and the organic unity of the Catholic faith into the curriculum and classroom environment.
- Attend faculty and administrative meetings as directed.
- Attend parent–teacher conferences and after‑hour evening and weekend academy functions as directed.
Required
- A practicing Catholic whose life is lived in conformity with the moral teachings of the Church.
- Commitment to the Catholic mission of the Academy and willingness to sign the “Faculty Memorandum of Understanding” and swear the “Oath of Fidelity” to the Catholic faith.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Love of great children’s literature.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Strong classroom management skills.
- Desire and capacity to run an efficient and orderly classroom.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills and strong attention to detail.
- Strong personal discipline and ability to work independently, as well as on a team.
- Ability to organize priorities.
Strongly Preferred
- Experience with and knowledge of Catholic liberal education.
- Strong grasp of history.
- Love for children’s literature.
- Strong catechetical background.
