Coordinator of Global & Community-Based Learning

The Coordinator of Global & Community-Based Learning provides leadership for the development, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of high-impact experiential learning opportunities that prepare students to become globally aware, civically engaged, and career-ready graduates. The position leads the College's Study Away, Service Learning and Community Engagement, and College-Sponsored Student Travel (CSST) initiatives while cultivating strategic partnerships with faculty and community organizations.

Through intentional experience design, the coordinator advances student participation, supports faculty innovation, and contributes to the mission of the Center for High-Impact Experiences. This position exercises considerable independent judgment in managing program operations while collaborating closely with the Executive Director and campus partners on strategic priorities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Support the day-to-day administration, implementation, assessment, and continuous improvement of Study Away, Service Learning and Community Engagement, and College-Sponsored Student Travel initiatives.

Develop new high-impact experiential learning opportunities, programs, and strategic initiatives that advance the mission of the Center for High-Impact Experiences.

Design and continuously improve learning experiences using evidence-based practices that promote student belonging, engagement, reflection, intercultural competence, civic responsibility, and persistence.

Coordinate and implement programs that prepare students for successful participation in global and community-based learning experiences, including Alternative Spring Break, Study Away, and related initiatives.

Lead the planning and coordination of program-specific events, including Passport Fair, Day of Service, Academic Honors Recognition Reception, and other Center-sponsored activities.

Represent the Center for High-Impact Experiences and Grand Rapids Community College at campus, community, regional, and professional events.

Study Away Administration

Coordinate all operational aspects of student-facing Study Away programming, including annual planning timelines, student recruitment, applications, pre-departure support, scholarships, travel documentation, insurance requirements, post-experience evaluation and reflection.

Serve as the primary coordinator for student participation throughout the Study Away lifecycle while ensuring compliance with institutional policies and travel requirements.

Support faculty leaders in the successful planning and implementation of study away experiences through consultation and communication with emphasis on student preparation.

Community Engagement & Partnership Development

Develop, cultivate, and sustain partnerships with community organizations, nonprofit agencies, and governmental offices that expand experiential learning opportunities for students.

Collaborate with faculty to develop and implement service-learning and community-engaged learning opportunities that align with course outcomes and institutional priorities.

Represent the College in maintaining productive relationships with external partners while identifying new opportunities for collaboration.

College-Sponsored Student Travel (CSST)

Coordinate the College-Sponsored Student Travel approval process, including reviewing travel requests, communicating institutional requirements, tracking approvals, collecting and archiving required documentation, and ensuring compliance with College policies.

Collaborate with supervisors, Center for Student Life and Leadership and Campus Police to support the facilitation of safe and successful student travel experiences.

Program Operations

Coordinate student recruitment, outreach, application processes, orientations, scholarships, participant communications, and post-program follow-up.

Identify barriers to participation and implement strategies that improve equitable access to global and community-based learning opportunities.

Manage student records and maintain accurate participation data while ensuring compliance with FERPA and institutional policies.

Assist with the development, monitoring, and stewardship of program budgets, scholarship funds, grants, purchasing, reimbursements, and program expenditures.
