Position Accountabilities and Essential Functions

POSITION SUMMARYLibrary student assistants play a key role in library operations. They provide outstanding customer service to students, faculty, staff and community members both in person and on the phone. They staff the library circulation and research desks. Students in this role should enjoy working with people, be comfortable with technology, strive to be dependable, approachable, customer focused and open to learning new skills and responsibilities.
Students in this role must have availability during the following library hours and should be able to commit to some opening, closing or Sunday shifts.
Library Fall/Winter Hours- Monday-Thursday 7:30am-8:00pm
- Friday 7:30am-4:00pm
- Sunday 12:00pm-6:00pm
Preference will be given to students with Sunday availability.
What You’ll Get to Do- Provide excellent customer service – in person and via phone
- Check library materials in/out and create electronic patron accounts
- Shelve library materials with accuracy
- Assist with processing and de-processing library materials
- Refer questions to library staff
- Assist patrons with printing and basic technology in the computer lab
- Replace printer toner cartridges and fill paper
- Clean library spaces regularly
- Assist with library displays and creative projects
- Assist with special projects
- Customer service: providing quality and friendly care to those who interact with the library (students, staff, faculty, community)
- Answering the phones appropriately
- Following through on questions to be sure they are answered
- Treating everyone with respect no matter how they treat you
- Maintaining strong character even when no one is looking
- Teamwork: collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal or to complete a task in an effective and efficient way.
- Completing tasks correctly and efficiently to assist teammates

- Actively paying attention to others, understanding their message, and responding thoughtfully.
- Communicating effectively about schedules and absences and using our team collaboration software (MS Teams) to keep informed.
- Critical thinking: the ability to analyze information objectively and make a reasoned judgment. It involves evaluating information received to solve problems.
- After learning the basics of your position, you will have the opportunity to develop your critical thinking skills by deciding when to ask questions and when to make decisions based on what you already know.
- You will develop critical thinking as you help students and decide when to refer questions to staff.

- Enrollment in at least 6 credits at Delta
- Ability to attend our mandatory fall training day
- Be ready to work when your shift begins and stay until it’s completed
