Automation Controls RoleAUTOMATION MECHANICAL ENGINEER
COMSTOCK PARK, MICHIGAN - LEAR ASI AUTOMATION DIVISION
As a member of the Automation team, the Automation Engineer will be responsible for leading, supporting, implementing, and managing automation projections while driving innovation in advancements.
The candidate will use their knowledge and experience to lead and implement automation cells and drive standards across North America. The candidate must be able to develop automation cell concepts, design EOATs and components, develop documentation standards, and project lead other integrators as a subject matter expert.

- Work with various assembly plants and integrators
- Work closely with Automation team, ASI Project Managers, and Lear manufacturing teams to develop systems and complete projects.
- Provide machine, mechanism, and tooling design along with drawing creation under minimal technical supervision.
- Prepare drawing packages for manufacture and assembly, ensuring they are complete and accurate, meeting all customer drawing requirements and proper drafting standards.
- Collaborate with shop members prior to and during the build.
- Deliberate with Automation Controls engineers to design for integration and select pneumatic components.
- Use Solid Works & Daft Sight to develop equipment, machine, mechanism, or EOAT designs that meet customer specifications and company quotes.
- Be knowledgeable in standards, processes, and best practices and apply them to duties.
- Develop predictive maintenance indicators to increase reliability and reduce downtime.
- Support legacy cell designs.
- Share design methodologies, productivity tools, standards, processes, and legacy information for increased knowledge within the company.
- Mentor less experienced design staff and assist in the development of concepts and design methodologies for projects.
- Work with integrators on outsourced cells to ensure they meet Lear Standards.
- Knowledge and experience with raw materials, fabrication processes, and techniques for maximizing fabrication efficiency of equipment.
- Experience in drawing creation for assemblies, weldments and details with dimensions and tolerances to meet requirements.
- Motivated to initiate and implement tasks, strategies, and techniques to increase productivity and profitability.
- Technically creative with an understanding of mechanical functions to provide robust and economical solutions.
- Capable of evaluating quotations, specifications, and documentation to discern functional requirements and define tasks for mechanical designs.
- Organized and flexible in work functions with multitasking ability.
- Analytical and decisive to define, evaluate and solve problems in an organized process.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with competency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to collaborate in team environments while maintaining individual duties.
- Communication with suppliers/integrators to aid in design decisions.
- Time management skills to reach design milestones within timelines.
- Experience with working with automated cells including Robot EOAT.
- Experience designing Robot EOAT and the entire robot cell (conveyor, guarding, robot placement, EOAT, sensors, cable tray, etc.).
- Ability to adapt designs quickly when changes are requested.
- Ability to travel up to 20% to customer sites to capture design information or assist installation.
- Mechanical Engineering Bachelor’s degree.
- 5+ years of experience in a machine design role at an automation/machine build shop.
