Materials Lab Engineer​/Materials Lab Technician

The Materials Lab Engineer / Materials Lab Technician position at FORTA in Grand Rapids, Michigan, plays a crucial role in the research and development of asphalt and concrete materials. Working closely with the engineering team, this role involves preparing, testing, and analyzing specimens in the advanced materials laboratory. The individual will adhere to strict laboratory procedures and standards set by ASTM and AASHTO, ensuring the generation of reliable test data.

By supporting product validation, performance troubleshooting, and innovation efforts, the Materials Lab Engineer / Technician contributes directly to engineering decision-making and real-world applications. Responsibilities also include equipment calibration, data analysis and reporting, material performance evaluation, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. Candidates must possess strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, analytical skills, and effective communication abilities. This position offers a hands-on, active material handling environment that requires standing, lifting, and continuous interaction with asphalt, concrete materials, and specialized testing equipment.

• For Engineer:
  Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or related field; 1-3+ years of relevant experience preferred.
• For Technician:
  Associate degree, technical training, or equivalent experience; 0-2+ years of relevant experience preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and data accuracy, hands-on mechanical aptitude, analytical thinking, ability to follow technical procedures, effective communication skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively.
