Job Description
The Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is seeking a Financial Institution Examiner in the Office of Insurance Evaluation. The role is a lifelong public‑service opportunity that helps protect consumers and maintain confidence in Michigan’s insurance and financial services industries.
As an examiner, you will monitor and evaluate the financial condition of Michigan insurance companies, meet with management teams, boards of directors, and industry professionals, provide guidance, assess compliance with state and federal regulations, answer questions, and promote sound business practices.

This hybrid position is primarily located in Southeast Michigan with in‑state travel (including overnight stays) and occasional out‑of‑state travel for training. Work must be performed in Michigan; relocation expenses are not reimbursed.

Required Education And ExperienceEducation: Bachelor’s degree with a business major, completing one course each in finance, law, and management, one course in marketing or economics, and six semester (nine term) credits in accounting.
Experience:
- Financial Institution Examiner 9:
No specific type or amount required. - Financial Institution Examiner 10:
One year of professional experience evaluating safe‑and‑sound practices through examinations or investigations of state‑chartered institutions, or insurance companies. - Financial Institution Examiner 11:
Two years of such experience, including one year equivalent to Examiner 10.
Financial Institution Examiner 9:
Bachelor’s degree in any major plus two years of equivalent professional experience in the financial or insurance industry.
Financial Institution Examiner 10:
Bachelor’s degree in any major plus either one year as a federal examiner or three years of equivalent industry experience.
Financial Institution Examiner 11:
Bachelor’s degree in any major plus either two years as a federal examiner or four years of equivalent industry experience.
