About the Unit

The Speech and Language Pathology Department is widely recognized for its excellent programs dealing with adult communication disorders resulting from a brain injury, voice problems, swallowing disorders, or oral motor dysfunction. We also offer lymphedema services at this location.

Scope of Work

The Speech‑Language Pathologist is an independent health‑care professional who provides individualized patient care that assesses and treats speech, language, social communication, cognitive communication, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders in children and adults per physician referral. Responsibilities include evaluation of referred patients, establishing patient and family–centered goals, and developing and executing treatment plans to promote or maximize independence in the discharged setting.

The staff SLP also participates in performance improvement and educational opportunities that promote growth and development of the department and profession.

Standard Qualifications
  • Education/Training: Master’s Degree, Certificate of Clinical Competence (ASHA) or Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY), ASHA.
  • Work Experience: Experience in adult/children neurological speech and language disorders, evaluation and treatment, including aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria, dysphagia, laryngectomy, stuttering, and voice disorders.
  • Additional

    Experience:

    Experience with head and neck cancer, tracheostomies, cognition, TBI, dementia, and modified barium swallow studies.
  • Certification/Licensure: Certificate of Clinical Competence (American Speech‑Language‑Hearing Association) (required) or Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) (required);
    Licensure in Speech Pathology–Michigan (required) or temporary license during CFY (required).

Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital – 100 Michigan St, Grand Rapids, MI.

Department: Inpatient Rehab – HDVCH.

Employment Type: Part‑time.

Shift: Day (United States of America).

Weekly Scheduled

Hours:

31 hours.

Hours of Work: 8:00 am – 6:00 pm.

Days Worked: Monday to Friday.

Weekend Frequency: Variable weekends.
