Position Accountabilities and Essential Functions

Position SummaryThe Counselor will develop an inclusive and equitable program to support student mental health and wellness that aligns with Delta's commitment to whole-person development and student success. Working closely with the Director of Student Support, this position will provide campus counseling and manage the operations to ensure access to mental health support for students.
This position will work to develop and deliver remote and face‑to‑face mental health services, oversee mental health interns, manage confidential mental health records, develop departmental policies and procedures, and educate the campus community regarding student mental health needs and best practices. This position will also network with regional providers to create a referral system for students with acute mental health or clinical intervention needs.
The Counselor provides backup support for students pursuing a leave of absence, receiving accommodations, and/or who are experiencing basic‑needs insecurity as needed.
In compliance with the ethical guidelines of the American Counselor Association the Counselor provides direct support services to students in a comprehensive retention effort involving assessment and Student Support System. Activities include career exploration, decision‑making and personal counselling within a learning‑centered environment focusing on Delta College's strategic initiatives. The Counselor will exhibit superior customer‑service skills and professionalism in their daily interaction and communication with students and colleagues.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities General Office and Team Contributions- Embed the College's mission and values throughout all responsibilities and work; and focus on student success as the guiding principle to informed decision‑making.
- Understand, develop, and provide an environment that supports diversity, equity, and inclusion, and incorporates cultural competency in the workplace.
- Contribute to positive teamwork environment.
- Provides individual and group counselling services to any interested student; is accessible and available to students to respond to their questions/concerns; identifies and recommends additional non‑academic supports needed for marginalized populations on campus.
- Develops, plans, implements, monitors and assesses student mental health initiatives across the campus and online.
- Provides assistance in managing crisis situations and responding to campus trauma (such as death of a student or faculty member).
- Establishes and maintains the platform through which tele‑mental health services are provided; administrates an online appointment request and tracking system for both in‑person and tele‑health settings.
- Provide clinical supervision, related documentation, and administrative oversight over counselling interns on an ongoing basis; works to build capacity of counselling availability and access for students.
- Responds to reports of student mental health issues, working with students to find resources that will help them persist and complete coursework.
- Design and deliver student success workshops focused on retention topics such as time management, test anxiety, stress management, and overcoming anxiety.
- Provide career counselling for undecided students, utilizing appropriate assessment tools to support career exploration and decision‑making.
- Collaborates and communicates with existing internal and external support mechanisms to aid students.
- Promotes and provides mental health training to faculty and staff.
- Maintain confidential files to track and monitor student wellness and mental health concerns.
- Coordinates mental health awareness and/or substance‑use awareness and harm reduction efforts for the campus community; facilitates trainings to educate and empower students and staff.
