The Release Train Engineer (RTE) has the primary purpose of supporting and coaching an Agile Release Train (ART) by steering it to success and navigating the complexity of delivering software in large, cross-functional environments. The ideal candidate for this role has 5 to 10 years of relevant work experience. In this position, you will help resolve and escape impediments, manage risk, help assure value delivery, and drive program-level continuous improvement.
The RTE is accountable for the overall planning, coordination, execution, and delivery of value through the program.
- Provide management and guidance for the Agile Release Train (ART) relating to the utilization of Agile practices and how to best ensure successful execution of Program Objectives.
- Work with all team members and stakeholders to achieve alignment across the organization.
- Collaborate with other RTEs to ensure the delivery of program-level objectives across the business.
- Drive the delivery of train value and consistently report on the value achieved to leadership.
- Provide broad oversight to ART capacity, budgets, and costs to ensure valuation optimization, including tracking, reporting, and communication to leadership.
- Schedule and facilitate key train ceremonies, including Pre- and Post-Program Increment (PI) planning, PI planning, Scrum of Scrums, and ART Sync meetings.
- Continuously improve and facilitate innovation on the train by leveraging the Innovation and Planning Sprint, Inspect & Adapt, and Train Retrospectives.
- Aggregate ART teams' objectives into cohesive Program PI Objectives.
- Provide Agile coaching to all members of the ART, as needed, to ensure proper program execution and program/feature grooming. This includes guidance on work breakdown for user stories, prioritization, estimation of work, evaluation of team velocity, decision-making, resourcing, removing impediments, and ultimately, the delivery of value.
- Assess the Scaled Agile maturity of the team and actively coach them to attain higher levels of maturity.
- Assist with internal and external communication to improve the overall transparency of information and decisions.
- Possession of any Scrum Master certification, or any SAFe certifications
- Completion of SAFe Release Train Engineer training.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in an IT role, with a minimum of 3 years spent working within a SAFe Agile environment as a Scrum Master or RTE
- Comprehensive knowledge of or direct experience with an enterprise SAFe Agile process, including tools and techniques such as Kanban boards, user story writing, burndown techniques, and retrospective facilitation.
- Excellent communication, mentoring, verbal, and written skills, with a proven ability to express complex technical concepts in clear business terms.
- Strong team-level experience collaborating closely to deliver tangible business value.
- Demonstrable experience working within a defined Dev Ops process, helping teams achieve efficient CI/CD practices.
- Demonstrable experience defining and implementing new ways of working across a large "team of teams."
- Ability to champion development teams by maintaining a solid working understanding of how development processes occur.
- Demonstrated ability to drive meaningful change at a "team of teams" level and guide process improvements.
- Proven experience running PI planning sessions and confidently speaking in front of large groups.
- Comfortable leading and coordinating 15 or more teams within a PI.
