Machine Builder, Grand Rapids MI

This is a first-shift Machine Builder position working Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with additional Saturday hours from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The role focuses on assembling complex test and simulation machinery by integrating machined and purchased components into fully functional systems used for vehicle emission testing, dynamic vehicle testing, and alignment verification.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble machined and purchased components into complete machines according to engineering drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Build and integrate mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components required for the proper function of machines such as chassis dynamo meters, roll brake testers, centering systems, and non-contact alignment machines.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and electrical schematics to ensure accurate assembly and wiring.
  • Perform mechanical assembly using hand tools and power tools, including fitting, fastening, and aligning components.
  • Complete electrical assembly tasks, including wiring junction boxes and routing cables and harnesses as specified.
  • Use TIG and MIG welding techniques when required to fabricate or modify parts and assemblies.
  • Verify that assemblies meet quality standards and functional requirements, making adjustments and corrections as needed.
  • Collaborate with other team members in fabrication, CNC, paint, and machine build departments to support cradle-to-grave production of custom equipment.
  • Follow safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area throughout the build process.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve basic mechanical and electrical issues encountered during assembly and initial testing.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of machine build experience.
  • Proven ability to build components required for the functional operation of complex machines.
  • Basic understanding of blueprints, mechanical drawings, and electrical schematics.
  • Ability to perform mechanical assembly using standard hand tools and related equipment.
  • Ability to wire junction boxes and perform basic electrical assembly tasks.
  • Experience with mechanical assembly and electrical assembly in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Competence in using common hand tools safely and effectively.
  • Experience with machine building involving both mechanical and electrical elements.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with TIG welding and MIG welding for fabrication and assembly.
  • Experience in building or working with test equipment such as chassis dynos, brake testers, or alignment systems.
  • Strong blueprint and print reading skills for both mechanical and electrical layouts.
  • Familiarity with pneumatic systems and components used in centering or positioning mechanisms.
  • Ability to work effectively within a cradle-to-grave custom machine build process.
  • Attention to detail and a methodical approach to assembly and troubleshooting.
