Position OverviewThe Lead Operator is the bridge between the production assembly track and the supervisory track. It is the first leadership tier on the floor. The Lead Operator performs hands‑on production work as the primary part of the role while also leading their line, setting the example for quality and pace, helping others, and keeping the line running. The Lead Operator works without a supervisor present as needed, executing the work order on hand and resolving minor issues on their own line.
This is a working leadership role, not a desk role.

Directing and assigning work
- Assign tasks and workstations to employees on the line.
- Direct the work of the line, typically 5 to 12 employees.
- Execute the schedule and priorities set by the supervisor; elevate when changes are needed rather than redirecting independently.
Judgment and problem solving
- Resolve minor production problems on the line without escalation, with primary judgment over parts shortages and material handler coordination.
- Escalate quality stoppages and safety work stoppages immediately to the supervisor; the Lead Operator does not hold independent stop authority at this tier.
- Report employee conduct issues to the supervisor.

- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Expert knowledge of the products and processes on the assigned line.
- Sound independent judgment within the scope of the line.
- Clear verbal communication, up and across the line.
- Ownership of the line's output; reliable and present.
- Advanced assembly knowledge, tool proficiency, and the ability to troubleshoot common line issues.
- Typically advances from Assembler 3; demonstrated skill, independence, and readiness rather than time alone.
- Able to stand for a full shift.
- Able to handle parts and use hand and power tools; some parts are heavy (about 25 pounds) and may be oily.
- Manual dexterity for repetitive assembly tasks.
