Maintenance Technician – 2nd Shift

The 2nd Shift Maintenance Technician plays a key role in ensuring reliable, safe, and efficient operation of equipment in a fast-paced food manufacturing facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Working an 8-hour second shift with a flexible start time between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. (set schedule once chosen), this role focuses on diagnosing issues, performing repairs, conducting preventative maintenance, and supporting equipment tear down and rebuilds for sanitation.

The technician helps maintain high standards of safety, food safety, and regulatory compliance while keeping production lines running smoothly.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, repair, and optimize facility equipment and infrastructure within a fast-paced food manufacturing plant.
  • Perform tear down and rebuild of all manufacturing equipment to support sanitation and production requirements.
  • Use hand and power tools to safely disassemble food manufacturing equipment for cleaning and reassemble it to exact specifications.
  • Conduct first-level quality checks and preventative maintenance audits on HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Carry out mechanical work on pumps, positive displacement systems, conveyors, and related equipment, including tear downs and set ups.
  • Complete electrical tasks such as wiring equipment and components; PLC programming is not required but basic electrical troubleshooting is expected.
  • Perform welding and fabrication tasks as needed to maintain or modify equipment and infrastructure.
  • Work with variable frequency drives (VFDs) to support motor control, including understanding ramp-up and ramp-down functions.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to guide repairs, assembly, and installations.
  • Execute equipment maintenance activities, including mechanical assembly, adjustments, and troubleshooting to minimize downtime.
  • Log tasks, maintenance activities, and work orders accurately using the Redzone Reliability Module.
  • Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), safety protocols, and food safety standards at all times.
  • Collaborate with production and sanitation teams to coordinate equipment availability and ensure efficient cleaning and startup.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and participate in projects and overtime work when interested.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and contribute to the overall cleanliness of the facility.
Essential Skills
  • Hands-on mechanical experience with motors, pumps, gears, pneumatics, and conveyors in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mechanical drawings accurately.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills for equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Experience working with variable frequency drives (VFDs) and understanding of their function in motor control.
  • Knowledge and practical understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) in a food or similar regulated environment.
  • Proficiency using hand and power tools for mechanical assembly, tear down, and rebuild of equipment.
  • Basic electrical skills, including wiring equipment and components and performing non-PLC electrical troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work independently as a self-starter and manage tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Capability to perform welding and fabrication tasks to support equipment maintenance and modification.
  • Comfort working in colder-temperature environments and adhering to safety and food safety standards.

  • Experience in a food manufacturing or processing facility is highly beneficial.
  • Familiarity with HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems in an industrial setting.
  • Experience conducting preventative maintenance audits and quality checks on production equipment.
