Overview
The Cardiac (Coronary) Cath Lab unit at the Meijer Heart Center is a highly specialized procedural unit focusing on providing care to patients having a variety of cardiac conditions. The lab is a very fast‑paced, dynamic unit that quickly adapts to emergent situations.
It consists of five procedure rooms and provides care for patients with heart failure, structural issues, peripheral circulatory issues, and coronary issues such as chest pain, STEMI (ST‑elevated myocardial infarction), and NSTEMI (non‑ST‑elevated myocardial infarction). Nurses in the cath lab are drawn to the diverse procedures performed and the cutting‑edge therapies offered to patients. We consistently see one of the highest volumes of STEMI patients in Michigan, caring for over 300 STEMI patients per year.
Our nurses become experts in caring for a wide array of patients, including those with Impella devices, IABP’s, Swan‑Ganz catheters, ECMO, and the management of unstable or declining patients. They learn the unique skill of caring for a patient through monitoring, assessment, sedating, and performing procedural tasks while maintaining highest standards of safety.
ResponsibilitiesDeliver nursing care responsibly and accountably as described by the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the State of Michigan. Demonstrate competency through the nursing process—assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Uphold the standards of professional performance, including ethical practice, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence‑based practice, research, quality improvement, professional practice evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health.
