Position Overview
The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) is seeking Corrections Officers for various facilities in the southern region of Michigan. The role involves the custody, security, and treatment of prisoners, as well as the development of interpersonal skills necessary to perform a range of corrections officer assignments.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee and participate in the custody, security, and treatment of prisoners in correctional facilities.
- Complete the DOC Officer Recruit Training program: 8 weeks of academy training followed by 2 months of on‑the‑job training.
- Pass annual training and continuing certification requirements to remain employed.
- Undergo drug and alcohol testing and physical fitness assessment.
- Completion of 15 semester (23 term) college credits in any field.
- Two years of full‑time corrections officer experience in a local, state, federal, or private correctional institution, or successful completion of basic training in the uniformed services.
- Pass a post‑job‑offer medical exam, drug screen, and physical fitness test.
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- Compliance with ethical standards and background investigation.
Employees with fewer than 15 semester credits may participate in an Education Waiver Program, which allows up to 24 months from hire to obtain the necessary college credits. Completion of the educational and experience requirements is mandatory for reclassification to Corrections Officer E9.
