Motor Carrier Officers are members of the Michigan State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED). They specialize in commercial vehicles and duties include traffic enforcement, crash investigation, driver and vehicle inspections, criminal interdiction, hazardous material transport, regulatory compliance, weigh station operation, infrastructure protection, and general emergency response. Officers conduct self‑directed patrols that encourage proactive and independent decision making.
Training and PayMotor Carrier Officer recruits complete training at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing, Michigan. They receive hands‑on, lecture, and scenario‑based instruction in firearms, patrol techniques, first aid, criminal law, precision driving, water safety, defensive tactics, report writing, ethics, FMCSA regulations, cultural diversity, and implicit bias.
- Recruits receive approximately $4,200 a month with benefits.
- Reach a top pay of over $81,000 after 6 years.
- Officers are eligible to transfer or promote to different posts after completing the training program.
- Most schedules prioritize day shifts, working one weekend day a month, and 13 paid holidays off a year.
- All uniforms and equipment are provided.
Applicants must take and pass the NTN Entry Level Law Enforcement exam and a Baseline Fitness Test. Accepted tests include the MSP Baseline Fitness Test, the MCOLES Pre‑Enrollment Physical Fitness test, the Military Annual Fitness Test, and the Out‑of‑State Law Enforcement Fitness Test.
Applicants must also pass the MCOLES Pre‑Enrollment Physical Fitness test, conducted by MSP, when receiving a conditional offer of employment.
Must be a United States citizen, a resident of Michigan before graduation from the Academy, at least 21 years of age by recruit school graduation, and possess a valid Michigan driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
