PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER/SECURITY OFFICER

DEPARTMENT: Public Safety & School Security

BARGAINING UNIT: Support Non-Exempt

WAGE: Grade 201 – Specific salary based on experience

DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Chief of Staff & Executive Director of Public Safety and School Security

JOB SUMMARY

The Public Safety Officer/Security Officer works as a member of the school security services and building teams. The incumbent would assist the Sergeants and/or the building administration in investigating incidents at their assigned site. Also, the incumbent is responsible for the safety and freedom from violence, and protection against theft and disruptions by all scholars, staff, and visitors within the Grand Rapids Public Schools.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

Education and Experience:

  • Associates degree or 60 credit hours

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Prior experience working youth
  • Bilingual communication skills, desirable

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to interact with scholars, parents, staff, and community in a tactful and courteous manner
  • Strong human relations skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Consistent record of good attendance and punctuality
  • Proven ability to participate as a member of the team
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Patrol all areas, both inside and outside, of the assigned site (i.e., hallways, parking lots, restrooms, locker room, cafeteria, etc.) to prevent vandalism, theft, rules, and/or law violations, loitering or any other questionable activity
  • Politely challenge all persons entering the building, directing those with authorized entry to their destination and removing unauthorized persons
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of busses; provide support to the bus drivers as needed or upon request
  • Identify those persons responsible for violations of school rules and regulations or laws
  • Report all safety hazards and unsafe conditions to the building administrators
  • Be familiar with the facility, administration, staff, and scholars at the assigned site
  • Provide security at school athletic events, parent-teacher conferences, graduations, and other school-related functions as authorized and directed
  • Investigate and report, on G.R.P.S. Incident Reports, all incidents related to security
  • Cooperate in every way possible with the Police whenever they are on school property
  • Be alert of all radio traffic and limit radio communication to only that which is necessary and security-related
  • Participate in training programs as requested
  • Cooperate with the school administration, staff, and scholars
  • Interact with co-workers, administration, scholars, parents, and the community in positive, supportive, and cooperative ways.
  • Consistently demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Stands and/or walks during most of the working day. Turns, stoops, climbs, bends, pushes, pulls, reaches for, and carries materials and equipment in the performance of tasks. Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds. Must be able to work outside for extended periods (up to the entire eight-hour shift) in all weather conditions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work is performed indoors although there will be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of scholars.
