About the Role:

The Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation and safety of facility infrastructure by performing routine and emergency maintenance tasks at the Grand Rapids Housing Commission (GRHC). This position requires a hands-on approach to diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining mechanical, electrical, and structural systems within GRHC facilities. The technician will be responsible for identifying potential issues before they escalation, thereby minimizing downtime and maintaining a safe environment for all occupants.

Collaboration with other team members and departments is essential to prioritize maintenance requests and complete projects efficiently. Ultimately, the Maintenance Technician contributes to the overall operational excellence and longevity of the facility’s assets through skilled workmanship and proactive maintenance strategies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school graduate (or GED) with preferred vocational technician certification beyond high school, with three (3) years’ experience or training in building construction or maintenance, or in the repair or maintenance of mechanical equipment. An equivalent combination of experience and education may also be considered.
  • Proven experience in plumbing, electrical wiring, mechanical repair, and carpentry.
  • Ability to use precision measuring instruments accurately.
  • Physical capability to climb ladders and perform manual labor.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to talk and hear clearly for safety and coordination.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical certification or vocational training in maintenance, HVAC, or related fields.
  • Experience working in a commercial or industrial maintenance environment.
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Basic knowledge of safety regulations and compliance standards.
  • First aid and CPR certification.
