School District Position Description

Position Title: Social Worker

Department: Special Services

Reports To: Supervisor, Special Services

Provide a problem-solving service to children (regular and/or special education) and their families. Serve as a key member of diagnostic teams and educational planning and placement committees, providing essential biological, psychological, and sociological assessment information.

Other duties may be assigned.

• Student Support: Perform casework services with individual students to correct personal, social, or emotional maladjustments related to their educational and social progress.
• Assessment & Placement: Coordinate or serve as a member of diagnostic teams and educational planning committees. Provide comprehensive biological, psychological, and sociological assessment data to assist in planning for children with adjustment problems.
• Collaboration: Consult and collaborate with school personnel to gather and share case information, establishing specific roles for modifying student behavior.
• Family Engagement: Perform casework with parents to increase their understanding of their child's needs, encourage constructive participation in problem-solving, and provide knowledge of available resources.
• Field Work: Conduct home visits to gather helpful information regarding a student’s background and environment.
• School Adjustment: Directly assist students in successfully adjusting to the school environment.

Supervises students.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

• Degree: Master’s degree from a graduate school of social work program.
• Practicum: A minimum of a 500-clock-hour supervised social work practicum.
• Experience: Satisfactory completion of one year as a school social worker under the direction of a fully approved school social worker.

• Certified as a school social worker.

  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Proficiency in writing reports and correspondence, and presenting information to managers, clients, and the public.
• Mathematical
  
  Skills:
  
  Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts like fractions, percentages, and ratios to practical situations.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
• Instructional Knowledge: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and student needs.
• Interpersonal: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and the community.

• Physical: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally sit, walk, or stand. Specific vision abilities include close vision.
• Environment: The noise level is usually quiet. The employee is directly responsible for the safety and well-being of students.
