Speech Advisor
The Speech Advisor provides leadership, instruction, and supervision for students participating in the school's speech program. The advisor develops students' communication, critical thinking, public speaking, and performance skills while fostering a positive, inclusive, and competitive team environment. The advisor coordinates practices, prepares students for competitions, and promotes student growth and achievement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Program Leadership
- Organize, develop, and supervise the school's speech program.
- Recruit and encourage student participation in speech activities.
- Establish team goals, expectations, and standards of conduct.
- Promote a positive team culture that emphasizes sportsmanship, respect, and personal growth.
- Student Coaching and Development
- Provide instruction in speech categories, public speaking techniques, interpretation, debate, and performance skills as applicable.
- Assist students in selecting, researching, writing, and refining speech materials.
- Conduct regular practices and individual coaching sessions.
- Evaluate student performance and provide constructive feedback.
- Competition Coordination
- Register students for speech meets and tournaments.
- Coordinate transportation, supervision, and attendance at competitions.
- Ensure students understand competition rules and expectations.
- Accompany and supervise students at speech events as required.
- Communication and Collaboration
- Maintain regular communication with students, parents/guardians, administration, and staff.
- Work collaboratively with teachers and school personnel to support student participation and academic success.
- Communicate schedules, competition information, and program updates in a timely manner.
- Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate records related to participation, eligibility, and competition results.
- Manage program budgets and expenditures in accordance with district procedures.
- Submit required reports, rosters, and documentation.
- Ensure compliance with district policies and applicable state and league regulations.
- Student Safety and Supervision
- Provide appropriate supervision during practices, travel, and competitions.
- Follow district policies regarding student safety, mandatory reporting, and conduct.
- Promote a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants.
Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated knowledge of speech, public speaking, communication arts, or related activities.
- Ability to work effectively with students, parents, staff, and community members.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Preferred
- Experience coaching speech, debate, theater, or related activities.
- Teaching license or experience working with school-age students.
- Knowledge of Minnesota State High School League speech activities and regulations.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to attend practices, competitions, meetings, and school events.
- Ability to supervise students in a variety of settings, including travel and competition venues.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Terms of Employment
Compensation according to the negotiated activities schedule or district-approved stipend. Work schedule and season determined by district and program needs.
