Research Plot Technician

The North Central Research and Outreach Center (NCROC) within the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) at the University of Minnesota is dedicated to advancing agricultural research. This position is located in Grand Rapids, MN, and works within the Plant Sciences unit.

Small plot research consists of duplicating the practices of crop production at a much smaller scale to evaluate new practices or products. You will work hands‑on with many different agricultural crops (agronomic, horticultural, forages, etc.), and operate and maintain specialized equipment.

• Plant, maintain, and harvest research plots using specialized equipment.
• Prepare seed, fertilizer, and other inputs for plot applications.
• Prepare and apply pesticides using various types of equipment.
• Safely operate specialized plot equipment and heavy machinery.
• Collect and record research data from field and greenhouse trials.
• Process research samples (cleaning, drying, grinding, etc.).
• Assist in organizing and coordinating seasonal work tasks.

• Clean and maintain research facilities, laboratories, and shops.
• Perform routine service and repairs on field and lab equipment.
• Pick up supplies and parts from various vendors.

• Assist with center‑wide outreach activities that may include Visitor’s Day, school groups, summer camps, tours, and volunteers.

• Assign and train tasks with temp/casual employees.
• Help maintain quality control to meet research objectives.

• High school graduate/GED with two (2) years of education and/or experience in agriculture, horticulture, or related field.
• A valid Minnesota Driver’s License.
• Must currently have or acquire a pesticide applicator’s license within 6 months.
• Ability to perform essential functions under normal working conditions that include working outside with exposure to weather conditions common to Grand Rapids and in the presence of potential allergens and irritants (with appropriate safety equipment).
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and keep accurate records.
• Ability to safely operate, service, and maintain field and lab equipment.

SALARY RANGE $22.39 per hour
