Job Description

This role offers an opportunity to work as an Engineering Technician focused on landfill construction quality assurance (CQA) and construction support. You will travel to solid waste facilities, primarily in Indiana and occasionally in surrounding states, to document daily construction activities, verify contractor work, and perform soil testing to ensure compliance with project specifications. The position includes extensive on-the-job training and does not require prior landfill experience, but it does require a willingness to travel frequently, stay in hotels for extended periods, and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

+ Monitor and document construction activities at solid waste landfill facilities, including field inspection and testing of soils and geosynthetic liners.

+ Perform construction quality assurance and construction quality control activities for landfill components and other environmental control systems in multiple states.

+ Conduct field and/or laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel.

+ Verify that contractor work complies with project specifications, construction drawings, and applicable quality standards.

+ Communicate regularly with project managers, engineering technicians, client representatives, and contractor representatives regarding site conditions, project requirements, and testing, observation, and inspection results.

+ Collect material samples, prepare associated identifying documentation, and transport samples to the laboratory for further testing.

+ Prepare, organize, and submit data, observations, and field reports in written and digital formats for daily transmittal to the Project Manager.

+ Maintain, clean, and properly store equipment, vehicles, and work areas to ensure they remain in good working condition.

+ Adhere to strict safety standards and follow all safety rules, practices, and requirements for each project.

+ Assist higher-level technicians or staff professionals under close supervision by performing basic testing and observation duties.

+ Provide clear, accurate documentation of findings and results, and discuss the accuracy of data with the Project Manager before submittal.

+ Submit required documentation and communicate testing and inspection results as directed by the Project Manager.

+ Progressively assume greater responsibility and training roles as experience and competency increase.

+ Perform pre-task planning before executing work to identify potential hazards and ensure safe, efficient operations.

+ Report any safety issues or concerns promptly to leadership and contribute to maintaining high quality standards on all projects.

Essential Skills

+ 1-2 years of professional experience within construction, such as construction inspection, materials testing, soil sampling, concrete testing, or related activities.

+ Ability and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods.

+ Ability and willingness to travel frequently and stay out of town, including overnight hotel stays and some weekends, as project needs require.

+ Strong communication skills to interact effectively with contractors, owners, project managers, and team members.

+ Professional experience using Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, for documentation and reporting.

+ Comfort working on active construction sites and performing field-based testing and inspection tasks.

+ Ability to follow detailed project specifications, construction drawings, and safety procedures.

+ Commitment to strict safety practices and quality standards in all aspects of the work.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+ Degree in geology, construction, environmental science, or a related field, or equivalent relevant construction or soil experience.

+

Experience with soil sampling and soil testing.

+ OSHA 10 certification.

+ OSHA HAZWOPER training or certification.

+ Prior experience operating a nuclear density gauge for soil or materials testing.

+ Familiarity with landfill construction, environmental control systems, and geosynthetic materials.

+

Experience with concrete testing and knowledge of American Concrete Institute (ACI) practices.

+ Experience preparing detailed field reports and CQA documentation.

+ Interest in developing a long-term career in the landfill and environmental construction industry.

Work Environment

This position is primarily field-based and involves working outdoors at solid waste landfill facilities in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
