Position: Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), School Nurse,

Reports to the Manager, School Nurse Program. Provides school health services by assessing the health needs of students, providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students, providing health information, emergency care and safety, communicable disease control and servicing as a resource to parents, teachers, staff and administrators.

Promotes and protects the optimal health status of students by
  • Performing health assessments and administering mandated screening (i.e., vision, dental, hearing, height and weight variation, etc.) of each student at the school.
  • Consulting with parents, teachers, and students regarding individual health appraisals and the appropriate follow up care.
  • Providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students by administering first aid, medications and specialized medical treatments according to physician's instructions and with parental written consent.
  • Counseling students and families on health conditions and lifestyle issues (i.e., mental health, pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease, substance abuse, etc.) to facilitate a healthier student population.
  • Providing care to students with chronic illnesses and extremely high‑risk students (i.e., allergies, asthma, diabetes, seizures, medically fragile, etc.) to assist the child in achieving the highest possible functional level.
  • Providing immediate response to students who need emergency medical treatment.
  • Providing emotional and mental health assessment to children. Assessing situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug, etc.) and other health related issues to identify problems, refer for proper treatment and to comply with legal requirements.
  • Assessing the health needs of abused children (physical, sexual, psychological and neglect), substance abusers, and pregnant students and providing appropriate care and referral.
  • Collecting and inputting all immunization records; ensuring all students are compliant with required immunizations.
  • Maintaining confidentiality regarding student health records.
  • Following rules and regulations for the prevention and control of communicable disease.
  • Promoting a healthy lifestyle and acting as a resource to students, teachers, and other school personnel on a variety of health related subjects (i.e., health education, medication management, substance abuse, child abuse, growth and development, food allergies, nutrition, hygiene, etc.).
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by
  • Participating in‑services and department meetings; along with continuing education and attending conference as approved.
  • Participating in professional meetings and IEP case conferences. Be available for school open house functions, health fairs, flu clinics, and athletic physicals as needed.
  • Completing other job‑related assignments and special projects as directed.
  • Acting as a liaison to community agencies and medical care facilities. Implementing and maintaining all school health records, including daily flow sheets, medication administration records, accident reports, communicable disease reports and individual health cards.
  • Cleans work areas (utilizing universal precaution procedures) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary environment.
  • Successfully complete skills validation as required.
Organizational Responsibilities
  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established time frames.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established time frames.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
