Electrical Engineer – Asset Management
Orbital is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support the execution of an Asset Integrity and Asset Management program at a client facility in Granite City, IL. This is a field-based engineering position embedded at the client's site, focused on electrical infrastructure evaluation, reliability engineering, and long-term asset management planning.
In this role, you will serve as Orbital's on-site electrical engineering resource — working with a high degree of independence while receiving technical oversight and managerial support from Orbital's office-based project team. You will be responsible for translating inspection findings and system assessments into sound engineering solutions and supporting the client in making informed, risk-based decisions about their electrical assets and infrastructure.
This position is well suited for an engineer who is equally comfortable at a desk developing studies and specifications and at a facility evaluating electrical systems firsthand — someone who takes ownership of the engineering work and sees it through from assessment to solution.
Essential Functions
Electrical Engineering & Assessment
- Serve as the primary engineering resource for electrical asset and infrastructure evaluations, applying engineering judgment to assess condition, identify deficiencies, and prioritize corrective actions.
- Evaluate existing electrical infrastructure — including power distribution systems, switch gear, transformers, motor control centers, grounding systems, and related equipment — to identify reliability risks and improvement opportunities.
- Review and interpret electrical inspection findings generated by the program's inspection team, translating field data into engineering evaluations and recommendations.
- Perform site visits to electrical systems and equipment as needed to verify conditions, gather supplemental information, and inform engineering decisions — not as an inspector, but as the engineer responsible for the solution.
- Prepare engineering reports, condition assessments, and technical recommendations for review by the client and Orbital's project team.
Reliability Engineering & Design
- Support power distribution studies and electrical reliability initiatives, providing the engineering analysis necessary to identify vulnerabilities and develop targeted improvement strategies.
- Develop engineering solutions for reliability improvements, including modifications to existing systems, equipment upgrades, and design changes that enhance the safety and dependability of the client's electrical infrastructure.
- Prepare calculations, designs, and specifications in support of identified repair and improvement projects.
- Coordinate with Orbital's office engineering team to ensure solutions are technically sound, code-compliant, and aligned with client requirements and applicable standards (NFPA, IEEE, NESC, NEC, etc.).
- Provide engineering support during project execution as needed — answering RFIs, reviewing submittals, and resolving field conditions — while construction and installation management remains the responsibility of others.
Asset Management & Planning
- Support long-term asset management planning by contributing engineering expertise to condition assessments, maintenance strategies, and electrical capital planning initiatives.
- Support electrical capital projects and RFP responses by providing technical input during scoping, planning, and execution phases, and contributing to the development of technically sound, competitive proposals.
- Maintain accurate records of engineering evaluations, calculations, and improvement histories to support Asset Management databases and long-term tracking.
- Identify recurring deficiency patterns and develop proactive engineering recommendations to support the client's long-term electrical reliability goals.
- Contribute to the continued growth and improvement of Orbital's Asset Management and Repair Services capabilities.
Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Comply with all Orbital, client, OSHA, MSHA, NFPA 70E, and site-specific safety requirements, including arc flash and electrical safety protocols.
- Complete all work…
