Position Information
$29.43/hr (includes $1 shift differential for 3rd shift). This position may be eligible for annual incentive pay and contracted increases as determined by the collective bargaining agreement. You will have the opportunity for continued salary growth.

Primary RoleIllinois American Water is seeking a Utility Operator to help execute operations at our 6‑8 mgd wastewater treatment plant in Granite City. In this role you will learn all aspects of the treatment facility, including lab testing, plant operation, maintenance, and more. The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical aptitude, be able to work independently, and possess strong time‑management and communication skills.

Schedule:
Days Tuesday‑Thursday and Friday/Saturday nights.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and ensuring reliable operations of the Granite City Wastewater Plant facilities. Operator duties include operation of the SCADA controls for plant operation and monitoring. While not operating, maintenance duties include receiving and testing chemical deliveries, general maintenance of the treatment facilities and outlying stations, housekeeping, and other duties as assigned by management. The utility operator must also be able to serve as a Filter Plant Operator, Operator Leadman, and Laboratory Technician, filling vacancies and performing normal or additional duties as required to maintain proper plant operations.
Knowledge/Skills- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Good mechanical skills
- SCADA operation
- Clear understanding of plant operation, pumping station operation, pumps, chemical feed systems, and adjustment
- Strong work ethic, time management, communication, organizational and teamwork skills
- Valid state driver's license
- Ability to lift 75 lbs.
- Computer literacy
- 0–2 years in the wastewater industry
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Chemistry, science, and mechanical subjects are highly desirable
- Current American Water employees hired before March 11, 2024 are not required to have an IEPA certification, but it is highly encouraged to obtain one
- Employees hired after March 11, 2024 are required to obtain an IEPA license in accordance with the CBA
- 7 am – 3 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday; 11 pm Friday – 7 am Saturday; 11 pm Saturday – 7 am Sunday
