Agriculture and Master Gardener Coordinator

Posted June 25, 2026. 12‑month, full‑time, county‑based position located in Grants Pass, Oregon.

Salary range: $62,000–$67,000, commensurate with education, skills, and experience.

Position Overview

This community‑centered role connects residents with practical, research‑based education in community and commercial horticulture while leading the Josephine County Master Gardener volunteer program. The coordinator collaborates with community partners, volunteers, and stakeholders to deliver high‑quality educational programs that address local needs and strengthen community engagement.

Responsibilities
  • Community and commercial agriculture (45%)
    • Assess needs of farming communities and design non‑credit programs.
    • Develop and deliver a wide range of horticultural programs for diverse audiences.
    • Provide local expertise on watering, orchard operations, pest management, crop production, marketing, and natural resource conservation.
    • Support statewide farm food safety programs, including workshops, seminars, and webinars.
    • Implement fee‑based programming for cost recovery and solicit external funding.
    • Respond to inquiries about gardening and natural resource management.
    • Provide instruction using Integrated Pest Management principles.
    • Participate in working groups and statewide projects to address emerging community issues.
    • Disseminate information through web, newsletter, radio, television, and presentations.
    • Organize advisory committees and maintain annual work plans.
    • Document impact and effectiveness of programs and volunteer activities.
    • Coordinate local pesticide recertification efforts for stakeholders.
    • Maintain an Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License.
  • Master Gardener volunteer and program management (45%)
    • Design, deliver, and evaluate Master Gardener Extension programs and materials.
    • Lead volunteer recruitment, training, and retention activities.
    • Develop and support a volunteer middle‑management structure.
    • Collaborate with faculty and professionals to ensure research‑based training.
    • Encourage outreach and educational services to diverse populations.
    • Serve as liaison to the local Master Gardener Association and advise on organizational procedures.
  • Organizational accountability (5%)
    • Use digital communication tools to increase program reach.
    • Contribute to Extension programs beyond the county.
    • Develop fee‑based practices and partner with external donors.
    • Create annual plans and evaluate program outcomes.
    • Ensure inclusive and accessible environments and reasonable accommodations.
    • Follow OSU brand guidelines and digital publishing standards.
    • Complete required training and civil rights reporting.
    • Maintain a respectful and collegial workplace culture.
  • Service (5%)
    • Participate in statewide Extension programs.
    • Cooperate with agencies and organizations in Josephine County.
    • Serve on university and Extension committees.
    • Attend professional development training.
    • Maintain active membership in professional organizations.
    • Market Extension programs locally, statewide, and nationally.
Qualifications
  • Minimum/Required
    • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, agriculture, or a closely related field; or equivalent experience (three years).
    • Demonstrated adult‑learning teaching skills.
    • Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License within six months of hire, maintained during employment.
    • Commitment to collaborative, inclusive, and respectful learning environments.
    • Proficiency with computers, office software, and collaborative platforms.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills for diverse audiences.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Experience leading or supervising volunteers.
    • Criminal history and driver’s license requirements meet university policies.
  • Preferred (Special)
    • Minimum one year of Extension or community‑education experience.
    • Experience leading volunteers for at least one year.
    • Training in plant diagnostics, pathology, or entomology.
    • Fluency in Spanish, including translation and teaching.
    • Understanding of needs and impact assessment techniques.
    • Ability to secure external funding for educational programs.
