Position: Deputy - Patrol (Certified/Lateral)

Eligibility & Qualifications

  • Already possess Police Basic Certification by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) or an out‑of‑state equivalent.
  • Currently employed as a sworn officer with a minimum of one year of full‑time employment.
  • Must pass the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT) and the Police Officer Selection Test (POST).

Vacation hour schedule (approx.)

  • 7–12 months (1/2 to 1 year): 48 hours (6 workdays)
  • 13–24 months (1 to 2 years): 96 hours per year
  • 25–60 months (2 to 5 years): 120 hours per year
  • 61–120 months (5 to 10 years): 144 hours per year
  • 121–180 months (10 to 15 years): 168 hours per year
  • 181 months and beyond (15 years +): 192 hours per year
Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities for the patrol deputy include, but are not limited to:

  • Represent the Josephine County Sheriff's Office with legal and high moral standards.
  • Adopt and apply modern police practices for crime deterrence, investigation, and apprehension.
  • Handle citizen complaints fairly, promptly, and judiciously.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and office policies.
  • Report directly to the patrol sergeant.
  • Arrest, assist in prosecuting, or release apprehended persons.
  • Investigate complaints to satisfactory conclusion and assist prosecution of suspects.
  • Testify honestly and convincingly in court.
  • Provide information on criminal law violations not directly assigned for the office.
  • Identify and report potential traffic hazards; inspect abandoned vehicles for criminal activity.
  • Respond to assistance requests; acquire information on all types of law violations.
  • Serve subpoenas and citations promptly and impartially.
  • Build personal contacts essential to law‑enforcement work.
  • Patrol in a manner providing the greatest deterrent value.
  • Assume control of emergency situations when responding.
  • Apprehend traffic violators and issue citations; regulate traffic when necessary.
  • Investigate traffic accidents and determine causes.
  • Complete and forward reports promptly; maintain clarity and accuracy.
  • Assist and coordinate with other agencies and offices, especially during emergencies.
  • Maintain courteous relations with the public and government agencies.
  • Refuse gifts or favors that could compromise the officer or the office.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local laws; policy and procedures.
  • Show proficiency in defensive driving, pursuit driving, defensive tactics, and firearms use.
  • Maintain all issued equipment in good condition; keep vehicle, uniforms, and personal weapons in proper repair.
  • Read all office orders, memos, and information relevant to the position.
  • Complete assignments not covered by listed duties when reasonably assigned.
Education & Experience

High school diploma or GED, and one to three months related experience and/or training. Specific duties may require additional education.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of DPSST Basic Deputy Certification within one year of hire.
Additional Requirements
  • At least ten years of work experience.
  • Minimum age 21; U.S. citizen.
  • Full background investigation, physical ability testing, medical and psychological screening, and fingerprinting.
  • Minimum standards outlined in Oregon Administrative Rules, section 259‑008‑0010.
