SUMMARYThis position serves as Law Enforcement Dispatcher for the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office. Operates communications equipment to receive and process incoming emergency and non‑emergency calls. Questions callers to determine the nature and urgency of requests, prioritizes, initiates, coordinates, and monitors police or other agency response. Provides pre‑arrival instructions to callers and relays current, pertinent information to units in the field. Requires initiative and independent judgment within procedural boundaries and exemplary customer service skills in all situations.
Enters and retrieves data from computer programs, maintains records, databases and prepares reports.
Dispatchers must work effectively in a team environment as well as independently, be flexible to accommodate changes in call volume, multi‑tasking, field activity and changing work activities. This position requires rotating shift assignments and is subject to mandatory overtime to maintain a fully operational 24‑hour facility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Operate a computer‑aided dispatch system, receive emergency calls from the public requesting law enforcement assistance.
- Determine the nature and location of the emergency; determine priorities and appropriate response per established procedures.
- Maintain contact with all units on assignments and keep status and location of police resources.
- Receive and process non‑emergency calls for service.
- Adhere to strict confidentiality policies.
- Enter, update and retrieve information from a variety of computer systems. Provide requests for vehicle registration, driving records and warrants, and provide pertinent data.
- Monitor several complex public safety radio frequencies. Operate a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones and computer systems.
- Deal with crisis situations or hostile people on the telephone.
- Accurately enter data into a Records Management system, including reports, citations, warrants, property, persons and restraining orders.
- Actively participate in a data entry quality control program.
- Monitor and report equipment performance variations or malfunctions.
- Relay and receive information from other public and private organizations; notify or activate other service agencies including County Road Department, City and County Public Works, State Highway Department, Animal Control, and Family Counseling.
- Study and maintain familiarity with major roads, streets, industrial areas, public buildings and the general geographic locations of cities, towns, and landmarks in the response jurisdictions of Josephine County.
- Perform related duties as required or assigned.
To perform this job successfully, incumbents must possess the ability to learn new techniques, including the operation of new equipment and software programs, and adapt quickly to changing work requirements in a high‑intensity work environment. They must know the geography and address system of Josephine County and neighboring jurisdictions, read and interpret area and street location maps and other geographic information sources.
This position requires substantial competence in performing and prioritizing multiple simultaneous tasks, operating office equipment efficiently, memorizing radio codes, employee numbers, laws, Sheriff’s Office procedures and extensive resource information, and possessing specific knowledge of the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement procedures.
