Public Works Technician

In this hands-on role, you’ll help keep our roadways safe, accessible, and running smoothly. Your work will include setting up traffic-control safety zones, supporting street-paving and construction projects, and operating and maintaining a variety of construction equipment. As a Street Technician, you’ll be an essential part of the team that ensures our streets, sidewalks, and transportation routes remain reliable for everyone who uses them.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, SEIU classified, and DOT-covered position. Individuals in this position will be subject to random drug screens and breath alcohol tests in accordance with DOT guidelines. There is one vacancy.

The schedule will be Monday-Thursday, 6:00am – 4:30pm. After successful completion of probation, Technicians will have the option to be included in the on-call rotation for after-hours emergency response a total of five weeks each year.

• Ensure traffic control and safety by setting up traffic control safety zones and performing flagging.
• Equipment operation and maintenance: Assist Equipment Operators in maintaining and operating construction equipment, including excavators and asphalt pavers.
• Street paving and construction: Rake and shovel asphalt and seal street cracks. You may also operate loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, compactors, street cutting saws, and other equipment.
• Concrete work: Construct, maintain, and repair concrete roads, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and ADA ramps, adhering to all city and state standards.
• Infrastructure maintenance:Maintain bridges, ditches, and pedestrian/bike paths. Repair or replace damaged infrastructure, including graffiti removal and resolving safety hazards.
• Inspections and reporting: Conduct thorough inspections of installations, and communicate directly with engineering, planning, and project leads. Identify needed repairs, document them in a punch list, and assist with walk-throughs and final inspections.
• Emergency response: Respond quickly to emergency situations. Your schedule may change with minimal notice to accommodate swift response to emergencies.

• High school diploma or GED, and
• Three years of experience in operations, installation, construction, repair, and maintenance of street structures; or
• An equivalent combination of education and experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the city’s driving standards.
• Class B Commercial Drivers’ License with air brake endorsement required within 360 days of hire.
• Ability to pass reference checks and education verification, and satisfy the requirements of a background check and physical exam.
• Ability to satisfy the requirements of a pre-employment drug screen.
