Telecommunicator

Job Summary

This position is with the Cibola Regional Communications Center; under the direction of the Telecommunicator Supervisor and the Telecommunications Director, is a 12-hr shift work position that receives and transmits radio traffic to law enforcement and emergency services personnel in the City of Grants and surrounding areas in Cibola County and acts as the primary public service answering point (PSAP) for law enforcement, fire, and medical agencies, as well as administrative calls.

Employee will monitor, query, and respond to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and will also make entries into the NCIC database. Employee is required to work irregular hours, attend job-related meetings, training courses and perform all other duties as assigned.

Work is performed in an indoor, open-space environment and stationary setting. Incumbents work with and are surrounded by computerized control panels that require detailed dexterity. Most of the time is spent in a seated position; however, dispatchers have the freedom to stand and move in a limited area, primarily that of the cordless reception area of the headset. Headsets are worn at all times while on duty on the operations floor.

Incumbents are expected to manage over the phone interactions and confrontations with angry, hostile, depressed and/or otherwise emotionally distraught members of the public. As a result, work requires quick, independent action and alertness in emergency and possibly life-threatening situations. Work entails extensive keyboarding and manual dexterity, and entails regular reaching, stretching, and lifting of standard dispatch supplies and materials, such as maps, binders, and flip charts.

• High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
• NMLEA and or EMD Certified dispatchers must provide a copy of the certification and must have six (6) months experience in the performance of dispatcher duties.
• Uncertified dispatchers must become state certified within one (1) year of hire date; exceptions may be made due to scheduling conflicts at the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy (NMLEA).
• NCIC certification and Security Awareness Training required within six (6) months of employment.
• Knowledge of and ability in radio communications, operation of telephone console, operation of National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and dispatching calls and related duties involving emergency situations.
• Learn and become efficient in the utilization of Computer-Aided Dispatching, mapping systems, integrated 911 systems and computerized radio consoles.
• Ability to write intelligible and complete reports and deal with situations requiring tact, understanding, and good judgment; always remain alert and respond quickly in emergency situations.
• Ability to listen, understand and communicate verbally and in writing in English.
• Must successfully complete a mandatory physical exam, hearing test, drug screen test, and background check;
  Must have no felony convictions or pending felony charges.
• Must have a valid New Mexico driver’s license or obtain a valid New Mexico driver’s license within six (6) months of employment.
• May not have any DWI or DUI within the last five (5) years.
• Ability to work in stressful situations.
• Knowledge with PC’s and Windows software required.
• Type 40 wpm accurately.
• This position requires residing in Cibola County and the ability to comply with safety guidelines and policies of the County.
