Overview

Under the general supervision of the Road Supervisor, performs a variety of skilled duties related to roadway maintenance, pavement preservation, and small road construction projects. Operates GPS-controlled heavy equipment and serves as a working crew lead, coordinating daily field activities of a small road maintenance crew.

Supports the City’s pavement preservation program through crack sealing, Gap Mastic sealing, seal coating, and chip seal preparation, while also assisting with grading, drainage improvements, and small road buildouts.

Key Responsibilities Field Operations & Crew Coordination
  • Coordinates daily work activities for a 5-person road crew.
  • Communicates job assignments, project priorities, and safety expectations.
  • Organizes equipment, materials, and worksite setup.
  • Promotes safe, efficient, and productive work practices.
  • Serves as a working lead; performs field work alongside crew members.
GPS Equipment Operation & Roadway Construction
  • Operates GPS-controlled heavy equipment including motor graders, loaders, excavators, and skid steers.
  • Performs road grading, shoulder repair, drainage improvements, and base preparation.
  • Utilizes GPS machine control systems and digital terrain models (DTMs).
  • Assists with layout and grading for small road extensions and buildouts.
  • Verifies grade, slope, and drainage for accuracy and long-term roadway performance.
Pavement Preservation Operations
  • Performs crack sealing to prevent water infiltration and pavement deterioration.
  • Applies Gap Mastic for targeted repair of joints, seams, and cracked pavement areas.
  • Assists with seal coating to protect and extend pavement life.
  • Supports chip seal operations including sweeping, preparation, rolling, and compaction.
Equipment and Worksite Support
  • Conducts daily equipment inspections and reports maintenance needs.
  • Assists with routine maintenance and care of specialized equipment.
  • Stages equipment and materials for roadway and preservation projects.
  • Sets up and maintains traffic control in accordance with safety standards.
Public Works Support
  • Assists with general roadway maintenance and repair activities.
  • Performs asphalt patching, shoulder repair, and surface preparation.
  • Supports seasonal operations including snow removal and storm response.
  • Performs heavy manual labor including lifting, digging, and material handling.
  • Performs additional duties and special projects as assigned by supervisor.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Frequent exposure to traffic, heavy equipment, dust, and job site hazards.
  • Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing.
  • Regular lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Position may require varied schedules including four 10-hour shifts or five 8-hour shifts.
  • May require extended hours during emergencies, storms, or peak construction season.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Knowledge of GPS machine control systems and grade control principles.
  • Understanding of roadway maintenance, grading, and drainage practices.
  • Ability to coordinate work activities and communicate effectively with crew members.
  • Knowledge of pavement preservation techniques and materials.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for equipment inspection and maintenance.
  • Strong awareness of safety practices and traffic control procedures.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid Utah Driver's License required.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Experience with GPS machine control systems preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL within a specified timeframe (if not already obtained).
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
