Purpose:
To assist under professional supervision in monitoring and instruction of special education students with a variety of physical, emotional, behavioral, or instructional needs within typical or specialized classroom settings. The employee assists in implementation of instructional, self‑help, and behavior management strategies to facilitate student success.
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Previous experience in an educational environment preferred
- Pass an academic assessment administered by GCISD; or
- 48+ hours of study in higher education, Associate’s Degree or higher
- An Educational Aide Certification; may be applied for once employed
- Adapt classroom work/homework under teacher direction to support and reinforce curriculum.
- Assist teachers in implementing lesson plans and developing students’ daily living, behavioral, and educational skills, following the IEP.
- Communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Perform record‑keeping, data collection, and basic clerical functions to support disabled students.
- Monitor students with specialized needs in less structured environments such as playgrounds, lunch, hall, etc.
- Help maintain behavior of assigned students, including intervening in crisis situations with approved methods of de‑escalation or restraint.
- Support social, communication, physical, and behavioral needs of students.
- Adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
- Assist the campus with limited duty assignments related to special education students as directed by the campus administrator.
- Adhere to a flexible schedule as provided by the campus administrator in conjunction with the special education teacher.
- Participate in meetings and training sessions as designed by District staff.
- Maintain regular and consistent attendance.
- Maintain confidentiality.
Equipment Used:
Wheelchair lift, ramps, student adapted equipment, personal computer, copier, and audio/visual equipment.
Mental/Physical/Environmental Demands:
Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting students; assistance with student hygiene may be required.
