Job Title: Special Education Assistant – RISE (Nonexempt) – Pay Grade: IS 204

Primary
Purpose:
Assist in the monitoring and instruction of special education students with various needs under professional supervision. Develop and implement instructional, self‑help, and behavior management strategies in typical or specialized classroom settings.
- Provide supervision and assistance for students with significant social, communication, mobility, cognitive, and/or behavioral challenges.
- Help students manage physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom usage, and hygiene.
- Assist students with physical disabilities (e.g., transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning).
- Adapt classroom work/homework under teacher’s direction to support and reinforce curriculum.
- Assist teachers in implementing lesson plans and developing students’ daily living, behavioral, and educational skills while following IEPs.
- Communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Perform record keeping, data collection, and basic clerical functions to support services for students with disabilities.
- Monitor students with specialized needs in less structured environments (playground, lunch, hallways, etc.).
- Help maintain behavior of assigned students, including crisis intervention and de‑escalation or restraint techniques.
- Learn and adapt to each student’s medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
- Assist campus with limited duty assignments related to special education students as directed by the administrator.
- Adhere to a flexible schedule provided by the administrator in conjunction with the special education teacher.
- Participate in meetings, training sessions as directed by district staff to carry out job responsibilities.
- Maintain reasonable and consistent attendance.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in an educational environment preferred.
- Pass GCISD academic assessment or have 48+ hours of higher‑education study, Associate’s degree or higher.
- Educational Aide Certification may be applied for once employed.
- Equipment Used: wheelchair lift, ramps, student‑adapted equipment, personal computer, copier, audio/visual equipment.
- Mental/Physical/Environmental Demands: maintain emotional control under stress; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting students; assistance with hygiene needs may be required.
