Adapted Physical Education Teacher

The primary purpose of the Adapted Physical Education Teacher is to develop physical skills and abilities of students with disabilities by implementing district/state physical education curriculum; documenting teaching and student's progress/activities/outcomes; developing students' leadership, teamwork, and responsibility; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students' progress, expectations, and goals.

Bachelor's degree in education

Valid Adapted Physical Education Certification

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

Knowledge of rehabilitation procedures, activities, and equipment used in physical education

Ability to instruct students and manage their behaviors in a variety of settings

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with students, parents, service providers, administrators, and community members

Major Responsibilities and Duties Adapted Physical Education Services
  • Plan and provide direct and indirect services consistent with adapted physical education goals contained in students' Individual Educational Plans (IEP).
  • Plan, develop, and follow a schedule based on student IEPs.
  • Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of adapted physical education services.
  • Select, acquire, alter, manage and provide adapted equipment.
  • Assessment
  • Assess students with disabilities to determine educational need for adapted physical education.
  • Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.
  • Develop, select and use appropriate assessment tools and methods and interpret results effectively to develop appropriate adapted physical education services and IEP goals.
  • Communication
  • Communicate with educational staff and parents regarding adapted physical education services, progress toward goal attainment, and necessary intervention strategies in a style that is appropriate for the audience, purpose and context.
  • Communicate with district staff and outside personnel, as appropriate, and other medical staff regarding student needs following district, state, and federal regulations for the release or request of confidential student information.
  • Provide staff development/inservice training in assigned school(s) to assist school personnel with classroom strategies/modification selections, safe use of adapted equipment, assistive technology and the implementation of adapted physical education programs.
  • Participate collaboratively on a team to develop integrated IEP's.
  • Communicate with parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people regarding implementation of interventions/techniques necessary for student progress.
  • Student Management
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level, interests, and needs of the student.
  • Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct, student handbook and individualized behavior intervention plan.
  • Program Management
  • Remain knowledgeable regarding current programs and intervention strategies as well as evidence regarding effectiveness.
  • Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students, district staff and parents.
  • Assist in the selection and ordering of equipment, adapted materials, current assessments and assistive technology.
  • Ensure care and maintenance of equipment and work area. Keep materials clean, organized, properly stored, and in good working condition.
  • Special Olympics coaching, organization, planning and participation.
  • Administration
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents required.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
