Train Service Personnel III
Under direct supervision, the Train Service Personnel III will operate steam and/or diesel train locomotives and passenger cars for Grapevine Vintage Railroad (GVRR) in the capacity of conductor, fireman and engineer in a safe and efficient manner. Provides a clean, safe and pleasant experience for employees and passengers and promotes the Grapevine Vintage Railroad as a premier excursion railroad.
Essential Functions
- Must be proficient in all positions while operating on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad, including brakeman, conductor, fireman, and engineer.
- Works with other engine crew members to ensure on time departures and arrivals.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections on locomotives, passenger coaches and related equipment.
- Makes daily inspections of equipment in use.
- Completes required GVRR Federal Railroad Administration log reports and forms in a timely manner.
- Assists in needed repairs and scheduled maintenance of all equipment.
- Diagnoses malfunctions, services and repairs locomotive and train systems, including but not limited to brakes, electrical, cooling, fuel, exhaust, power train, suspension, and HVAC systems.
- Completes all associated reporting, record keeping and required Federal Railroad Administration forms in a timely, accurate, and organized manner.
- Maintains FRA required qualifications and certification requirements as "service covered employee" as expressed in GVRR Engineer and Steam programs.
- Successfully take and pass, with a score of not less than 85, the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) rules test after every 36 months of service.
- Assists in Roundhouse operations to include, but not limited to, the proper use, storage, ordering, and maintenance of tools, supplies, and equipment.
- May oversee check rides and hands-on training for new and volunteer staff.
- Participates in charters, special events and other duties as assigned.
- Assists in volunteer programs to promote the Grapevine Vintage Railroad.
- Ensures that fellow employees and passengers have a safe and pleasant experience.
- Ensures equipment, facilities and grounds are secure, clean and well maintained.
- Ensures all records, files, forms and logs are well maintained and organized.
- Ensures cost effective repairs and maintenance of all equipment, grounds, and facilities.
- Maintains current rule book and special instructions.
- Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
- Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
- Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
Required Skills
• Must be proficient in office procedures with skill in operations of computers and communicating verbally and in writing.
• Knowledge of the safety standards for passenger trains and related equipment.
• Knowledge of federal railroad inspection standards.
• Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in servicing and repairing steam, gasoline and diesel equipment.
• Knowledge of vehicle and equipment mechanics, including internal combustion engines and hydraulic and electrical systems.
• Ability to identify abnormal reading or trends in data collected from gauges, meters, dials, instruments, etc. according to established formats
• Ability to follow oral and written directions.
• Ability to diagnose defective operations and excessive wear on mechanical equipment parts and components.
• Ability to diagnose and repair railroad equipment.
• Ability to determine functional interrelationship of parts within a mechanical system.
• Ability to interpret technical reference manuals.
• Skill in operating a variety of equipment used in railroads maintenance and repair functions and operations including but not limited to forklifts, steam and diesel locomotives, passenger coaches, railroad switches, turn tables, two-way radio and a variety of hand and power tools.
Education, Experience and Other Requirements
