Position Title
Adjunct Instructor, Biology
Job SummaryTeach one or more sections of anatomy and physiology or introductory college biology courses such as environmental biology, general biology, or microbiology. Prepare and execute lecture and lesson plans, grade student work, and observe chemical and other lab safety protocols. For anatomy and physiology positions you must be willing to work with human cadavers/donors.
Job Description- Teach courses in the discipline as scheduled each academic semester, using a variety of student‑centered, culturally relevant instructional methods to support diverse learning styles and student needs.
- Meet all classes at assigned locations and times. If unable to meet an assigned class, report absence to supervisor and academic division staff in an appropriate manner.
- Develop, revise, and maintain instructional materials, course content, and syllabi that align with departmental standards and student learning outcomes.
- Observe and evaluate student performance through assignments, exams, discussions, and projects. Provide timely and constructive feedback.
- Support student retention and success by identifying at‑risk students, providing instructional support, and referring students to appropriate college services.
- Be available for student consultation through phone or email.
- Use approved College standardized systems to provide students and the division with a syllabus that includes course objectives, learning outcomes, attendance policies, required materials, timelines, and evaluation criteria.
- Deliver course content using inclusive teaching strategies and incorporate instructional technology, including the Learning Management System (LMS) and other digital tools.
- Encourage and review student course evaluations to improve teaching effectiveness and course delivery.
- Maintain accurate and timely records for grading, attendance, and other required documentation. Submit grades and related records by established deadlines. Produce appropriate grade and course records for supervisor upon request.
- Uphold academic integrity policies and address violations in accordance with college guidelines. Use the appropriate college policies and procedures to resolve and document student concerns.
- Participate in college governance, division and departmental meetings, and, when appropriate, program advisory boards and committees.
- Attend required Adjunct meetings in the Fall and Spring semesters and complete all required compliance trainings (e.g., Title IX, Clery Act).
- Engage in professional development to stay current in instructional methods, academic discipline, and institutional policies.
- Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum planning, assessment, and instructional improvement.
- Maintain a high level of professional ethics and conduct all classes in accordance with college policies and approved instructional materials.
- Maintain a safe and organized classroom/laboratory environment by adhering to safety protocols, properly storing equipment and materials, and resetting the lab/classroom for the next class session when applicable.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean or Associate Dean.
- Master’s degree or higher in Biology or a related field and demonstrated currency in the field.
- Previous college teaching experience.
- Demonstrated professional learning or certification in evidence‑based student‑focused pedagogical teaching and assessment practice such as ACUE, workshops, and data use.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English.
Adjunct Faculty may be assigned to any campus, including Grayslake, Lakeshore, Southlake, or any college extension site.
Compensation2025‑2026: $1,373 per load hour
2026‑2027: $1,414 per load hour
