Title: Dean of Students

Reports To: Building Principal

Department: Building

Classification: 10 month, with up to 12 additional days

FLSA Status: Not exempt

Job Overview

The middle school dean of students provides leadership and direction in supporting and promoting a safe learning environment for each student.

Qualifications
  • A current Professional Educator License (PEL)
  • Administrative endorsement – Preferred
  • At least five years teaching experience
  • Knowledge of Middle School Philosophy
  • Extensive knowledge in social-emotional learning and student discipline
Performance Responsibilities Leadership
  • Responds to parent, student and staff concerns in a supportive and timely manner
  • Assists school staff and substitutes with their concerns regarding student conduct
  • Collaborates with staff (in a non-evaluative manner) to build stronger relationships with students in regards to classroom management and behavioral interventions
  • Serves as a vital member of the building Problem Solving Team
  • Assists with school wide efforts related to school culture, climate, character education, social-emotional well being and behavioral initiatives, in line with CCSD 46 initiatives
  • Monitors, organizes, and provides leadership in the area of attendance improvement efforts
  • Establishes methods to seek feedback from students to gain insight into their perceptions about how the school wide culture is supporting their academic, social, emotional and character development
  • Assists leadership in the planning and direction of assemblies and special events
Behavioral Interventions
  • Builds and models positive relationships with all students
  • Involved in the development and implementation of proactive behavior intervention programs for students
  • Motivates students in a positive direction that will allow them to increase individual decision‑making responsibilities
  • Communicates with parents, teachers, special services department, support personnel, and students on matters of student’s needs, plans and discipline for student success
  • Collects and analyzes data to monitor and assess current student behavior and to develop new programs or systems to enhance the learning experience for students for the future
Safety
  • Takes a leadership role in maintaining and supervising a safe learning environment
  • Assists with facilitation and implementation of all activities related to school-wide emergency preparedness initiatives
  • Participates on Building Safety Team
  • Assists in the communication of the school safety plans to students and colleagues
  • Supervises and supports student arrival and dismissal process
Evaluation

As per current State Law and the District’s current collective bargaining agreement
