Position Title:
Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing

This position will work with a team in our DHH Department and will be the sole provider for our deaf and hard of hearing students in our early intervention preschool program. The provider is a special education teacher specifically trained to teach students who are deaf and hard of hearing and address their unique language and learning needs. The provider is an expert in teaching self‑advocacy, expressive and receptive language, hearing assistive technology, vocabulary, listening, and transition skills, and designs and implements individualized instructional plans for each student.

- Understand early childhood (birth to
8) characteristics across physical, cognitive, social, emotional, language, and aesthetic domains, and learning processes, bilingual/multilingual development, and motivation to learn. - Value developmental variations, strengths, interests, abilities, challenges, and learning approaches for all children—especially deaf and hard‑of‑hearing children.
- Base teaching practice on coherent early childhood theory, current research on brain growth and development, executive function, motivation, play, and dispositions toward learning.
- Apply understanding of multiple influences on young children’s development and learning, including family, community, cultural, linguistic contexts, temperament, and economic conditions.
- Understand how early childhood programs, including early intervention, affect short‑ and long‑term outcomes.
- Create safe, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments with full family engagement.
- Use exceptionalities knowledge to provide culturally responsive, meaningful, and challenging learning experiences.
- Create and implement personalized, safe, respectful, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning.
- Use Montana standards and curricula to implement individualized learning opportunities aligned with students with exceptionalities.
- Use multiple assessment methods to evaluate and identify individualized learning needs.
- Select, adapt, and use evidence‑based instructional strategies.
- Collaborate, communicate, and advocate in culturally responsive ways to improve programs for individuals with exceptionalities and their families.
- Understand the philosophical, historical, and legal foundations of special education.
- Demonstrate proficiency in procedural competencies, regulations, and state data systems.
- Use eligibility criteria to make informed decisions about learner identification.
- Understand foundations of special education services for infants, children, and youth who are deaf or hard of hearing.

- Apply research‑based instructional methods in a bilingual environment.
