The Montana Department of Corrections (DOC) is creating a safer Montana through Accountability, Rehabilitation and Empowerment. The Public Safety Division operates Montana’s prisons safely and securely and provides supervision and support for offenders in the community through its Probation and Parole Bureau. The Probation and Parole Officer position helps manage the correctional population, promote public safety and encourage offenders to make positive life-changing decisions.

• Supervise and counsel 80-100 offenders and coordinate with the public and criminal justice system.
• Conduct pre-sentence investigations and make placement recommendations to the District Court and Parole Board, in collaboration with other agencies.
• Develop rehabilitation and treatment plans, determine probation conditions, and decide on incarceration needs and level (local jail or Montana State Prison).
• Refer offenders to appropriate resources or programs, monitor progress, and assess risk and needs.
• Investigate alleged violations of probation or parole, pursue warrants, and testify in district court or revocation hearings.
• Handle potentially hostile or high-risk situations, which may require use of OC spray, firearms, and handcuffs.
• Work varying schedules including nights and weekends; may be called 24/7 to assist facilities or law enforcement; may travel up to 10% plus training travel.

• At least a college degree in a related field (e.g., criminology, psychology, social work, sociology, guidance and counseling) and formal training in behavioral sciences.
• Exceptions may be approved by the department. Related work experience in corrections/detention, criminology, education, medicine, psychiatry, psychology, law, law enforcement, social work, sociology, psychiatric nursing, or guidance and counseling may substitute for educational requirements at the rate of 1 year of experience for 9 months formal education if approved by the department.
• Current employees are exempt from this requirement but encouraged to further their education.

• POST Basic Certification is required after training at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and one year of employment with the DOC.
• Requirements for POST Certification include: U.S. citizenship, age 18+, successful fingerprinting and background checks, good moral character, high school diploma or GED, and valid Montana driver’s license.
