Responsible for ensuring the safety of the pool patrons. Work is performed under the direction and supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, Aquatics Supervisor and other supervisory staff.

  • Ensures the safety of patrons.
  • Strictly enforces policies, rules and regulations to maintain a safe swimming environment and facility. Promptly warns users of any existing safety hazards in order to prevent accidents and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations.
  • Responds quickly to all emergency situations and administers first aid, CPR or AED when needed.
  • Contacts emergency medical personnel when a serious injury occurs and reports such incidents to the Aquatics Supervisor or other supervisory staff immediately.
  • Assists in the proper maintenance and sanitary operations of the assigned facility.
  • Completes Lifeguard checklist and daily records relating to rescue assists, first aid, weather conditions, sanitation and patrons as required.
  • Conducts programs in the pool including swimming lessons, special events, and aquatic programs.
  • Reports facility or equipment failures or issues immediately to on duty supervisor.
  • Participates in rotation schedule as needed.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned and required.
  • Must have a strong swimming background.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate.
  • Must be certified or have the ability to be certified in CPR/PR, AED, oxygen administration, disease transmission, and first aid.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Employee must possess or have the ability to obtain valid Montana driver’s license.
  • Must be a skilled swimmer and able to pull weight through the water.
  • Must be physically able to rescue someone drowning or injured in the water.
  • CPO, WSI, and LGI certifications, preferred.
  • Ability to observe daily operations of aquatic facility and its patrons.
  • Ability to maintain and operate classes and instruction to ensure quality and safety.
  • Ability to resolve problems and answer questions in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to fill any staff position when necessary.
  • Thorough knowledge of the use and applications of water rescue methods and lifesaving, first aid practices and techniques.
  • Ability to report to work on time, in proper attire and well-groomed appearance. Ability to maintain professional conduct, on and off the job.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, and the general public.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position does not supervise staff.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, employees may be exposed to adverse weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and wind and to chemicals used in cleaning and sanitation of pools.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to swim, stand, walk, sit, bend, crawl, twist, reach, ride and perform similar body movements. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move over 50 pounds. When more than 50 pounds employees are encouraged to use a team lift. Possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to use pool equipment;

the ability to talkand hear in person or by telephone; and the ability to see and read instructions.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

The work week is Sunday through Saturday with a varying schedule. This short-term position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime. Any overtime must be authorized prior to working.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
