Highways Operative

Overview

To carry out general maintenance works and operations, working with a Chargehand, undertaking a wide range of routine works in one of the Planned Response Teams. To respond to emergencies and call‑outs on out‑of‑hours rosters as required and assist with winter maintenance activities as a second man or driver’s mate.

• Abrasive Wheels
• Emergency First Aid
• Safe Dig
• Current Driving Licence
• CSCS card if client requirement
• Minimum level of everyday behaviour as set out in the company behaviours matrix
• Potential & interest in obtaining LGV licence

• Manual Handling
• General health & safety awareness
• Risk assessment awareness
• Traffic Management
• Use of PDA as required

• Ability to apply a wide range of generalist skills
• Understanding of risk assessments and safe systems of work
• Ability to interpret and carry out work from a specification
• 12 months+ experience in a relevant role
• Ability to use small plant and equipment
• Ability to operate a mini excavator
• Hold an HGV Licence with CPC

• Team player, prepared to contribute and participate fully in team work
• Prepared to work varying hours to meet the needs of the business
• Willingness to apply skills to a variety of different highways jobs, with changing team members
• Prepared to develop and undertake relevant training and qualifications
• Can complete record sheets, paper or electronic
• Can take responsibility for plant and equipment
• Can use own initiative
• Understand and be responsible for own safety, plus that of others
• Be available for emergency and/or winter call‑outs

Full‑time – 40 hours, Monday to Friday
