Position Summary We are seeking experienced Carpenters to support facilities operations and maintenance at a government facility in King's Point, NY. The Carpenter will perform skilled carpentry, repair, installation, and general maintenance work throughout the campus in support of facility operations along with other general maintenance tasks.

This position requires an experienced tradesperson capable of independently completing carpentry assignments while maintaining a safe, professional, and high-quality work environment within a federal facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled rough and finish carpentry work associated with the maintenance, repair, alteration, and improvement of campus buildings and facilities.
  • Construct, install, repair, and replace walls, partitions, doors, door frames, windows, ceilings, flooring, cabinetry, shelving, trim, and other building components.
  • Repair and maintain wood, metal, and other architectural finishes and structures.
  • Install and repair locks, hinges, door hardware, closers, and related building hardware.
  • Measure, cut, shape, assemble, and install building materials using hand and power tools.
  • Perform drywall installation, patching, framing, and related finish work as required.
  • Read and interpret drawings, sketches, specifications, work orders, and technical instructions.
  • Estimate materials and supplies required to complete assigned work.
  • Respond to routine and corrective maintenance work orders and complete assignments within required time frames.
  • Coordinate work with other trades, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, and general maintenance personnel.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, materials, and assigned work areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Follow OSHA requirements, site safety procedures, and all applicable federal and contract requirements.
  • Document completed work and communicate job status, material requirements, and facility issues to supervision.
  • Perform other carpentry and facility maintenance duties as assigned in support of contract requirements.

Skills & Requirements Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • 5-7 years of experience as a Carpenter or in a directly related carpentry trade.
  • Demonstrated experience performing commercial, institutional, industrial, or government facility carpentry and maintenance work.
  • Working knowledge of rough and finish carpentry methods, materials, tools, equipment, and applicable safety practices.
  • Ability to properly use hand tools, power tools, measuring devices, saws, drills, and other standard carpentry equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, sketches, and work orders.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot and complete carpentry repairs and installations.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position, including lifting materials, climbing ladders, bending, standing, and working in various facility environments.
  • Must be able to meet all federal site access, security, and background requirements applicable to the contract.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience supporting a federal government, military, educational, institutional, or large commercial facility.
  • Experience working as part of a multi-trade facilities operations and maintenance team.
  • Formal apprenticeship, vocational, or trade-school training in carpentry.
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes and OSHA requirements.

Work Environment Work is performed throughout the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy campus and may include administrative buildings, academic facilities, residential facilities, shops, utility spaces, and other interior and exterior campus locations.
