Tharos Training Center is the leading provider of Protective Security Officer (PSO) training in the National Capital Region. Operating from a state‑of‑the‑art, 40,000-square‑foot facility, it trains over 5,000 security professionals and government personnel annually. The center offers comprehensive instruction, including firearms qualification, first aid, CPR, active shooter response, and specialized certifications such as Virginia DCJS and FPS PSO training. Tharos is the only private training center in the region dedicated solely to law enforcement and government contracting, providing a mission‑focused, high‑quality training environment with automated indoor firing ranges, flexible training areas, classrooms, and an advanced active shooter simulator.
It offers both initial certification and refresher training to maintain PSO readiness.
Using next‑generation simulation technology, including the TI Training Simulator, Tharos delivers immersive, scenario‑based training with realistic CO2‑powered weapons, enhancing PSO decision‑making, compliance, and firearms preparedness. The tri‑annual Active Shooter Training reinforces readiness and risk mitigation for federal security contracts.
Responsibilities- Range Operator - Full Time role with pay rate of $19 hourly.
- Monitor the daily range schedule; ensure ranges are entered Hot and Cold using Brains Computer Software.
- Communicate Range Hot and Cold status with Range Master via hand-held radios.
- Assist with the preparation of the Daily Range Control Brief as directed by the Range Master.
- Conduct Range Check‑in and Check‑out tasks in accordance with Range Control Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- Coordinate daily range usage and ensure the Daily Range Control Brief is accurate and submitted in a timely manner.
- Ensure ranges are checked out/in in accordance with Range Control SOPs.
- Report range deficiencies to the Range Master and range conflicts to Tharos Scheduling for resolution.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- This position will be primarily based at the Upper Marlboro, MD location.
- Work is performed under supervision from the Compliance and Facility Manager.
- Expected to work up to forty (40) hours per week.
- To stand and sit for several hours.
- May lift up to twenty (20) pounds and carry over some distance; carts and dollies provided.
This is a Full‑Time position providing support to clients in other time zones. Hours are typically 8:00 am to 5:00 pm EST for client service, with potential flexibility to accommodate workloads. Availability for nights, weekends, and holidays may be required for projects.
TravelTravel will be less than 10%.
Required Education, Experience and Skills- U.S. Citizenship required; candidates must be at least 21 years of age.
- Experience as a Range Safety Officer preferred, or equivalent training/related experience in U.S. Military or Law Enforcement required.
- Proficiency with MS Office required.
- Effective oral and written communication skills with all levels of the organization.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage time and multiple priorities to completion.
- Problem solving skills with an analytical thought process.
- Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
