Position Summary:
The Division of Student Affairs (DSA) at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) is a forward-thinking, student success-oriented team of professionals committed to its role in strategically engineering and implementing the co-curricular out-of-class student experience. Staff members within the Division of Student Affairs are expected to positively contribute to our mission of supporting students in the co-curricular environment and provide an experience that inspires students academically, intellectually, personally, and emotionally.
The Student Conduct Specialist supports the day-to-day functions of the Community Standards & Conflict Resolution unit within the Dean of Students Office. This position will administer the student conduct process, communicating and enforcing the Student/Registered Student Organization Code of Conduct; serve as a university conduct administrator, adjudicating cases of academic and non-academic misconduct; facilitate conflict resolution processes; serve as a resource to the university community and campus and local law enforcement agencies regarding student conduct issues and potential conflict;
assess the effectiveness of the conduct process; coordinate educational programming on student rights and responsibilities; respond to conduct emergencies as needed, and assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
Pursuant to Title IX, the Clery Act, and University policy, this position is required to report information about sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, and stalking to the Title IX Coordinator and appropriate law enforcement officials.
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act.
UNC expects all staff to report concerns related to harm to self/others to support the safety of the Community of Bears.
Job Duties:
Case Resolution and File Management (70%)
* Serve as a primary Resolution Coordinator in the Student/Registered Student Code of Conduct process.
* Responsible for adjudicating cases of student misconduct including suspension and expulsion-level cases using current evidentiary standards. Student misconduct cases include, but are not limited to: off-campus behavior; on-campus housing violations; criminal proceedings;
Title IX investigation reports; organization misconduct, including hazing; academic misconduct; and other violations of the Student Code of Conduct.
* Collaborate with staff in the Office of Student Engagement regarding student organization misconduct.
* Manage major cases with multiple parties and perspectives without bias.
* Facilitate conflict resolution processes, such as mediation and restorative justice conversations for individuals in dispute.
* Offer conflict coaching regarding options for resolution and refer to appropriate agencies when reporting duties apply.
* Utilize and assign sanctions and learning outcomes based on applied student development, holistic learning, and restorative justice perspectives. Balance the needs of the individual and the community.
* Utilize Maxient database for case management and tracking.
* Maintain meticulous and private records in compliance with state, federal, and local laws such as FERPA, HIPAA, etc.
Administrative Support (10%)
* Provide administrative support for the Dean of Students Office.
* Prepare corresponding memos, reports, and letters to students, support people/families, and campus partners.
* Cross-reference weekly reports from local law enforcement agencies for incident(s) involving UNC students, request reports from local law enforcement, and manage documentation for such cases.
* Monitor and process incoming reports from University police.
* Update conduct records and communicate with campus partners about Suspensions, Expulsions, issued PNGs, as well as the lifting of Suspensions, Expulsions, and PNGs.
* Process and redact disciplinary records, as requested.
* Perform conduct checks for the Federal Government, FBI, student engagement and employment opportunities (i.e. Study Abroad, ASAP Advocates, New Student Orientation Leaders, Housing, among others).
Education and Outreach (10%)
* Create and deliver outreach, education, and resources. Coordinate and deliver educational resources and on-going development opportunities for students, faculty, and staff, and families regarding conduct, conflict resolution, crisis response, and working with individuals in distress.
