COMPENSATION RANGE: 40.00 - 70.00 per credit hour

Position Summary:
The ASL English Interpretation Lab Mentor provides mentorship to UNC students enrolled in ASL English Interpretation (ASLEI) major courses with the INTR prefix to facilitate individual and/or small group interactions to supplement or remediate interpretation skills taught in courses.
This is a semester-long, part-time assignment that has the potential for renewal each semester, including fall, spring, and summer semesters.
Job Duties:
The ASL English Interpretation Lab Mentor must be a certified interpreter, with the skills to accurately model ASL English interpretation, assess a student's interpretation skills, identify the student's interpretation strengths and weaknesses, and design and implement a successful mentorship plan with appropriate learning interventions. In addition, the ASL English Interpretation Lab Mentor needs outstanding soft skills to meet a variety of students where they are emotionally and academically at their level of skill development coursework at UNC.
The ASL English Interpretation Lab Mentor will work independently and therefore will need to exercise critical thinking and judgment in all their interactions. As a member of the Department, the ASL English Interpretation Lab Mentor will need to be familiar with federal laws (e.g., FERPA) and UNC policies (e.g., technology users' policy), as well as some of the external regulatory bodies that influence the ASLIS philosophy and course design (e.g., Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, National Association of Interpreters in Education, Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education).
Finally, the ASL English Interpretation Lab Mentor will work with technology in the lab and at a distance and needs to be familiar with these media.
Minimum Qualifications:
National Interpreter Certification (NIC/CDI or equivalent, BEI Advanced or Higher, EIPA 4.0 or higher).
Exemplary people skills
Competence with technologies, in the lab and delivered to distance students
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience mentoring working interpreters
Experience mentoring/tutoring students who are learning to become interpreters
