Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Schools, the Director of Student Support Services and Engagement provides strategic leadership for district-wide student discipline, engagement, attendance, restorative practices, student safety, and behavioral support systems. This position develops and oversees policies, procedures, and programs that promote equitable student outcomes, ensure compliance with federal and state laws, and support safe, inclusive learning environments.

The Director collaborates with school and district leaders to analyze data, implement strategic initiatives, address complex student matters, and strengthen student support systems. The position also provides leadership for crisis response, threat assessment processes, alternative educational pathways, professional learning, and the supervision and development of staff responsible for student engagement and support services.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and oversee district wide philosophy, protocols, monitoring systems, and staff supports related to K–12 discipline, restorative practices, alternatives to suspension and expulsion, and services for students involved in the juvenile justice system. Ensure compliance with federal and state law, board policy, and reporting mandates. Communicate best practices for addressing student discipline. Produce guidelines that ensure equity and due process are provided to students when they are involved in disciplinary incidents.

    Monitor and analyze district wide discipline data, lead related strategic initiatives, and support school and district leaders in using data to set goals, drive decision-making, and improve student outcomes.
  • Support building administration on data analysis, communication strategies with parents and students while the student is engaged in the disciplinary process. Work with the Legal Counsel and Executive Directors to administratively place students as necessary. Develop creative options for students needing alternative educational environments.
  • Build collaborative partnerships with BVSD departments including, but not limited to, MTSS, Special Education, Academics, Legal, Student Support Services, and Schools team in fulfillment of BVSD Strategic Plan objectives and in support of school leaders.
  • Support the work of the District Director of Student Supports with counselors K‑12 by collaborating on professional development, graduation guidelines, ICAP, and other related objectives. Support the development of school leaders through coaching, school visits, communication, and collaboration with Executive Directors.
  • Support District processes for threat assessments, suicide risk reviews, bullying, sexual harassment, discrimination, mandatory reporting, and other safety‑sensitive student processes. Oversee the district reporting process and support school leaders with intervention and support programming.
  • Provide ongoing supervision, development, coaching, mentoring, and learning experiences for the District Student Engagement Coordinator, Attendance Advocates, Engagement Specialists, Restorative Practices Coordinator, and Bullying Prevention Grant Coordinator.
