Position: Professional Land Surveyor I – Greeley

The Professional Land Surveyor I position is responsible for Professional Land Survey work within the Region 4 (northeastern Colorado) Survey Unit. The position will perform and manage field and office land survey functions, coordinate all survey related work with a survey consultant on a project from the beginning to end. Position is required to stamp a Professional Land Surveyor number on all documents pertaining to the work it’s responsible for (GPS Control, ROW monumentation, etc.).

This position also provides leadership, guidance and training to other survey unit positions with the Region.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform and/or manage office and field land surveying services from project initiation (project scoping) and control survey through final Right-of-Way monumentation;
  • Responsible for ensuring adequate data is obtained in the field so that property rights can be properly determined;
  • Must establish both horizontal and vertical control, research various survey plats, field notes, and other documentation to aid in the collection of proper field data;
  • Prepare, stamp and file plats, monument records, documents as required by State law and setting of final ROW monumentation;
  • Perform field surveys to determine location of ROW and other land boundaries;
  • Responsible for the restoration and preservation of survey monuments associated with any given project;
  • Responsible for the planning and coordinating of Global Positioning System (GPS) surveys to be used for CDOT project control and land corner ties. Will then create a Project Control Diagram;
  • Regularly acquire, through meetings with CDOT engineering and specialty unit personnel involved with the project, a good understanding of what is going to be required from the survey unit for the project;
  • Decide what Land monuments must be used on a survey and, if they do not exist, then must decide, based on evidence and Law, where to reset the needed monuments;
  • Decide where to establish a new section monument based on the existing ground evidence in the area; create a new monument record showing how they determined where to set the monument for the Board to save and file.
  • Conduct early field visits to establish necessary survey control for anticipated project limits;
  • Meet with consultant surveyors to coordinate the scoping (limits of the survey), calibration of equipment, and methods of surveying;
  • Instruct and train consultant personnel on proper surveying processes, procedures and computer programs to ensure that the completed survey will meet CDOT specifications;
  • Monitor Consultant in the creation of scopes of work and survey work hour estimates;
  • Certify various survey records including but not limited to control survey diagrams, survey reports, land corner monumentation records and survey tabulation sheets (this certification requires that the various diagrams, reports and records be signed and sealed with the positions’ Professional Land Surveyor stamp and number prior to being filed with the appropriate repository);
  • Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment

Primarily 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM work hours, Monday-Friday with the opportunity for a flexible schedule

  • Combination office environment and field work at project sites; approximately 80% spent in the field; 20% spent in the office
  • Travel required during work hours throughout the Region for assigned projects, meetings, etc.
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
  • Required to work in mountain terrain (altitude), including climbing to some areas
  • Required to work near heavy traffic areas
  • Required to work in all types of weather
  • Must be able to lift survey equipment and sand bags, up to 50 lbs
