We are seeking motivated nursing students to join our Medical Surgical Department as Nurse Externs. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands‑on clinical experience in a fast‑paced hospital environment while completing your nursing education.
Department Placement Nurse Externs will be assigned to one of the following units:
- Medical Oncology Telemetry Floor 44-bed unit specializing in oncology care with continuous cardiac monitoring
- Surgical Ortho Neuro Floor 44-bed unit focusing on surgical, orthopedic, and neurological patient care

- Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program
- Completion of fundamentals of nursing coursework
- Good academic standing
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or ability to obtain upon hire)
- Previous healthcare experience
- Strong interest in medical‑surgical nursing
- Work alongside experienced registered nurses
- Gain practical clinical skills in a hospital setting
- Provide direct patient care under supervision
- Develop critical thinking and time management skills
- Build professional relationships and networking opportunities

POSITION SUMMARYThis positioin, under the direct supervision of a licensed professional registered nurse, will allow the nursing student within one year from graduation with a Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Nursing prior to passing State Boards, the ability to expand their clinical experience while working through standard Nurse Extern competency assessment on a wide variety of patient care activities, which include classroom training, participation in patient care planning, implementation, observation and evaluation, as well as identification/reporting significant observations.
The unlicensed Nurse Extern role is not a permanent position. Employment will be impacted based on criteria outlined in the Nurse Program policy.
