Job SummaryThe Correctional Officer II is accountable for providing lead work and limited supervision responsibilities. The role may include assignment to various units such as control centers, mail rooms, meal halls, canteens, visitation centers, medical facilities, housing units, etc. The officer coordinates activities of others in regulating inmates, civilians, property, security, custody, and control functions.
Responsibilities- Providing lead work guidance and training to assigned positions
- Recommending assignments for correctional officers
- Providing input into performance plans
- Promoting and maintaining a safe and secure environment through observation and communication, adherence to regulations, implementation adjustments, and the Code of Penal Discipline
- Enforcing statutes, regulations, orders, directives, and procedures
- Managing inmate behavior and encouraging personal accountability through effective, professional communication
- Monitoring and controlling access to the facility and restricted areas
- Training and guiding staff on the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment, and chemicals
- Enforcing security procedures by conducting searches and counts of inmates, controlling contraband, and performing searches of cells, pat, and transportation
- Responding to emergency situations such as fights, fires, and escapes according to policy and preparing required reports
- Seizing, holding, controlling, and subduing violent or assaulting persons, requiring body strength and agility
Positions are subject to working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safety and security.

- High School Diploma or GED certificate
- At least two (2) years of corrections‑related experience, law‑enforcement patrol experience, or military experience
- Experience must be described clearly in the application’s “Work Experience” section
- Any work experience less than full time will be prorated
- Corrections‑related experience is defined as direct service to inmates such as correctional officer, teaching, social work, nursing, food service, general maintenance, or program implementation like Correctional Industries
- College coursework may substitute for required experience on a year‑for‑year basis; transcript required
- Corrections experience with the Colorado Department of Corrections
- Strong organizational commitment and team‑building skills
- Experience with housing and security operations
- Good computer skills
- Experience in coaching or mentoring
- Ability to follow instructions and self‑directed work ethic
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and critical‑thinking skills
- Strong attention to detail and thoroughness
- Knowledge of the COPD process
- Time‑management skills and ability to de‑escalate situations
- Adaptability to change and self‑control under stressful conditions
- Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient
- Acceptance of diverse work environments, including exposure to Oleoresin Capsicum during basic training
- Physical ability to meet defensive tactics requirements
- Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid Colorado driver’s license
- Must consent to mandatory medical screening and hold harmless clause
- Have no felony convictions disqualifying the applicant
- Legally eligible to work in the United States; no sponsorship offered
- Successfully pass all modules of the basic training, including defensive tactics
- Meet physical requirements for defensive tactics and duty packages (lifting, striking, restraint, etc.)
- Complete tuberculosis screening upon hire
- Prohibited from working while under the influence of any substance; random drug testing will occur
