Job Summary:
The Traffic Signal Technician I performs entry-level installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment reporting to the Traffic Signal Supervisor. This position supports the safe and efficient operation of traffic control devices, including signals, detection systems, communication equipment, and field hardware. The Technician I assists with inspections, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance while gaining the skills needed to advance to higher-level signal technician roles.
Experience, Education, and
Skills:
- High school diploma
- Six (6) months of experience
- IMSA Level I certification in traffic signals, traffic signs, markings, and/or ability to obtain certification within one year.
- Traffic Control Supervisor certification or ability to obtain within one year.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) or ability to obtain within one year
Preferred:
- One to three (1-3) years of traffic-related experience.
- IMSA Level II certification.
OR Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job,
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of electrical theory and practice including materials, diagrams, and methods used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electric and electronic control devices.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to equipment operation, electric currents, traffic patterns and conditions, and other related precautions.
- Self-motivated and willing to learn.
- Ability to respond to calls within thirty (30) minutes while on-call.
- Ability to follow and transmit clear written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, superintendent, and the public.
- Ability to perform specialized tasks including but not limited to, good computer skills, configuring signal controllers, Ethernet switches, time clocks, vehicle detectors, emergency vehicle detectors, setting mast arms, span wire, pedestrian poles, and other traffic signal equipment.
- Ability to use standard hand and power tools including saws, shovels, wrenches, blowers, and spray degreasers.
- Ability to be on call on a rotational basis.
Travel
Category A-Standard Local Travel:
This position requires occasional local travel within the County. Employees may be expected to walk or drive short distances to attend meetings, trainings, or perform work at other city buildings or partner sites.
Essential Functions:
- Assist with the installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal equipment, including signal heads, cabinets, detectors, wiring, and communication devices.
- Perform routine inspections to identify damaged, malfunctioning, or worn signal components and report issues to lead technicians or supervisors.
- Assist in testing and adjusting traffic signal controllers, detectors, and ITS devices to ensure proper operation.
- Support the installation and maintenance of cameras, radios, and other ITS field devices.
- Operate hand and power tools used in signal installation and maintenance.
- Assist in setting up traffic control and work zones in accordance with safety standards and MUTCD requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment issues using assigned systems.
- Assist with bucket truck operations and work safely at heights while using fall protection equipment.
- Respond to signal malfunctions, outages, and emergency service calls under supervision.
- Follow all safety procedures, electrical safety standards, and City policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:
- Work is performed primarily outdoors across a variety of municipal environments, including roadways, and construction sites, with occasional indoor tasks at maintenance shops.
- Routinely exposed to all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice.
- Exposure to hazardous conditions such as working with heights, near hazardous locations, and/or energized electrical equipment.
